HomeMy WebLinkAbout2008-09-08 Historical Preservation Committee Minutes September 8, 2008 CALL TO ORDER Chair, Betty Fuller, called the meeting to order at 10:03 a.m. The meeting was held at City Hall in the Pre-Council Chamber at 201 North Ector Drive, Euless, Texas. MEMBERS PRESENT Betty Fuller, Donna Mickan, Gary Fieldsend, Troy Fuller, Helen Payton, David Brown, Dan Clark, Michele Burger, James Gathings, David Massey, Veva Lou Massey, Tom & Sue Stover, Mavy Nell Wright, Joe Cannon, Weldon Cannon, Don Martin, Ralph Williamson, Helen Lightbody, Norma Lively, Helen Gleghorn. RECOGNITION OF VISITORS Mayor Mary Lib Saleh Council Member Leon Hogg Billy Owens Sandra Crowley STAFF PRESENT Ray McDonald, Director of Parks and Community Services Trish McDonald, Intern Michael Davenport, Recreation Supervisor Ofa"Mary" Faiva-Siale, Projects Coordinator Vernon Gilmore, Fire Inspector APPROVAL OF MINUTES Donna Mickan made a motion for the minutes to be approved. Troy Fuller seconded the motion, motion approved. TREASURER'S REPORTS The treasurer's report was postponed until October's meeting. VISITORS REPORTS 1. Sandra Crowley, President of the Euless Library Foundation, gave an update on the mural project. $20,000 has been committed to the purchase of various tiles. Approximately $14,000 has been received in payment. RSVP's were taken for the "Meet the Artist" EHPC Mtg. 090808 reception on September 19, 2008 at the Library. Handouts were passed out on tiles sold and tiles still available for purchase. 2. Vernon Gilmore, Fire Inspector with the City of Euless, is collecting historical data and photos about the Euless Fire Department. He is looking for photographs of previous Fire Chiefs to display at Fire Administration. The Department is also working on a display of fire fighters' children in the armed forces to also display in the Fire Administration building. Mr. Gilmore indicated that the younger fire fighters have shown a great interest in the history project. Mr. Clark suggested that the Fire Department's photos could be scanned for the Historical Committee's photo collection. Mr. Gilmore agreed. DOCENT'S REPORT/RECRUITMENT 1. David Massey, Sue Stover and Tom Stover worked the June 14, 2008 open house. It was reported that twenty-four people visited the Museum. 2. David Brown, Gary Fieldsend., Shirley Mercer and Betty Fuller were docents on Saturday, July 12, 2008. There were fourteen visitors that day. 3. Donna Mickan, Helen Lightbody, Helen Payton and Betty Fuller were docents on Saturday, August 9, 2008. Mrs. Mickan reported twenty-nine visitors that day. 4. Donna Mickan, Betty Fuller and Helen Lightbody volunteered to docent on September 13, 2008. 5. Betty Fuller, Mavy Nell Wright and Joe Cannon volunteered to docent on October 11, 2008. STATUS OF CURRENT PROJECTS 1. Calloway Cemetery: Mr. Massey reported that eighty-two names are now on the contact list he has been working on. Mr. Massey and Mr. Payton are working on the application for tax exempt status for Calloway Cemetery. Members of the Cemetery Sub-Committee are: David Massey, Bill Byers, Weldon Cannon, Beth and James Gathings, Iva Nail, Helen Gleghorn, Veva Lou Massey and Betty Fuller. The Sub-Committee scheduled to meet at the Parks and Community Services building on September 15, 2008 at 10 a.m. to continue working on the census. 2. Oral History Project: • Oral History recordings of several Committee members need to be conducted. Bill Byers, Troy Fuller, Weldon Cannon, and several others were mentioned. It was further discussed that the Committee should start video recordings of the project instead of voice recording. Committee members agreed that this was a good idea. • Staff is waiting for a photograph from Mrs. Halatono Netane to post with her interview. • Staff is also waiting for Reverend Haisila's proof to be returned. • Council Member Leon Hogg's interview will be completed as staff has the opportunity. 3. City Website Update: EHPC Mtg. 090808 • Dan Clark spoke with Adam Eakins about the updates to the website and Mr. Eakins will work on it when he returns from vacation. • Staff reported that the following will be added to the website: 1. Links to other historical websites per the Committee's request 2. Link to the oral history page 3. Link to the write up on the Fuller House, Himes Log House, McCormick Barn and Calloway Cemetery. 4. Link to the Faun Boyd Cookbook 5. Link to a volunteer opportunity page and donations page 6. A page for ongoing Committee projects 7. A page listing historical markers in Euless 8. A link to the Board and Commissions page 4. Photography Project: No report was given on the photo taking project. 5. Photo Scanning Project: Dan Clark reported on the numbers of photographs already scanned. Trish McDonald has done a great job scanning the photographs. 6. Library Photo Display: The project is going very well. Gary Fieldsend has been very helpful with the project. Dan Clark explained that a narrative is displayed with each photo and description cards are also available for readers to take home. 7. Photo Album Project: The Sub-Committee will meet at the Fuller House on September 22, 2008 at 10 a.m. to work on the albums. 8. Historical Photo Exhibit on November 8, 2008: • Gary Fieldsend and Dan Clark will work with City staff on selection of photographs, displays, etc. for the event. • Mrs. Fuller will have the photo albums ready for display at the event. • Gary Fieldsend will have a display on Aviation. Joe Cannon mentioned that photographs of the old beacon that used to be located near the Old Greater Southwest Airport used to be displayed at the Amon Carter Museum. He indicated that they were donated to the University of Texas at Austin. Dan Clark and Gary Fieldsend will research more photographs for the aviation display. • Mr. Fieldsend will make up text cards for the photographs that will be displayed. 9. Donationis: • Mrs. Fuller asked for a section in Euless Today to include a list of artifacts that the Committee would like donated to the Museum. • David Brown volunteered to drive to Oklahoma and pick up the Blackie Sustaire desk. Donna Mickan made a motion for the Committee to pay for Mr. Brown's gas. Sue Stover seconded the motion. All were in favor, motion approved. 10. Local Marker Project: Weldon Cannon reported on the following; • The Horticulture Marker has been received. It will be set as soon as feasibly possible. • The draft for the Euless School marker application is done, a copy was given to the Committee. The deadline to finalize submission of the application is January 15, 2009. A total of sixteen-hundred dollars will be needed for the process and purchase of the EHPC Mtg. 090808 marker. According to the Texas Historical Commission, a sponsor is required to receive funds acquired for the marker, keep it and eventually write the check to the Commission for the purchase of the marker. Helen Payton made a motion that the Euless Historical Preservation Committee be the official sponsor for the marker and receive donations, manage and write the payment for the purchase of the marker. David Massey seconded the motion. There were no oppositions, motion approved. 11. Timeline: Mr. Cannon is still working on the Euless Timeline. 12. Labeling Project: Mavy Wright was asked to attend the Photo Album Sub-Committee meeting on September 22, 2008 to get ideas for the labeling project. MCCORiMICK BARN / OUTDOOR UPDATE RIMES LOG HOUSE UPDATE FULLER HOUSE UPDATE COMMITTEE REPORTS 1. Mr. Massey posed a question regarding who was the first sheriff in Euless; Mr. Massey thought that perhaps Earl Stapleton was the first sheriff in Euless? Weldon Cannon mentioned Vernon Anderson was probably the first Sheriff Elect. Mr. Massey asked if anyone knew who the first paid police officer in Euless was. STAFF REPORT 1. A new category was added to the ribbon awards presented at the Annual Parade of Lights, it's called the Best Historical Ties to Euless Award. Staff asked if the Committee would be interested in having two members judge at the parade this year. The Committee will have two judges for the event. CHAIRMAN'S REPORT 1. Betty Fuller reminded the Committee that the Tarrant County Historical Commission's Annual Summit will be on October 30, 2008 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. A staff member will • help with the Committee's display for the event. 2. Mrs. Fuller and Donna Mickan met with the HEB-ISD regarding the Elementary School field trips. 3. The Committee discussed taking a tour of various local historical sites and cemeteries. Sue Stover made a motion for the Committee to take the tour after the Committee's regular meeting on November 10, 2008. Dan Clark seconded the motion. Motion approved. Mrs. Fuller asked if a City van would be available to take the Committee on the tour. Staff will have a van available for the tour. 4. Mrs. Fuller thanked the City for their support and assistance in ensuring the success of the Committee's projects. EHPC Mtg. 090808 5. The Chair also thanked each of the Committee members saying that "Without your time and efforts in serving as docents and volunteering for projects, we would never achieve the many goals we have set for ourselves and the City of Euless." ADJOURNMENT Dan Clark made a motion for the meeting to adjourn. David Massey seconded the motion. Motion approved.
