HomeMy WebLinkAbout2008-11-10 Historical Preservation-Committee Minutes • November 10, 2008 CALL TO ORDER Chair, Betty Fuller, called the meeting to order at 10:04 a.m. The meeting was held at City Hall in the Pre-Council Chamber at 201 North Ector Drive, Euless, Texas. MEMBERS PRESENT Betty Fuller, Doris Brown, Donna Mickan, Mavv Wright, Robert Nail, Weldon Cannon, Helen Gleghorn, Gary Fieldsend, David Massey, Veva Lou Massey, Troy Fuller, Beth Gathings, James Gathings, Helen Payton, Ralph Williamson, Sue Stover, Tom Stover, Joe Cannon and Norma Lively. RECOGNITION OF VISITORS Bill Golden Susan Ellis Jimmy Payton STAFF PRESENT Ray McDonald, Director of Parks and Community Services Trish McDonald, Recreation Staff Intern Michael Davenport, Recreation Superintendant Ofa "Mary" Faiva-Siale, Projects Coordinator APPROVAL OF MINUTES Troy Fuller made a motion for the minutes to be approved. Helen Gleghorn seconded the motion, motion approved. TREASURER'S REPORTS Treasurer, Robert Nail, reported a total balance of S6,997.91. The balance includes S159.00 for the Trigg tile. VISITOR'S REPORT Susan Ellis will begin serving on the Historical Preservation Committee on January 1, 2009. She introduced herself to the Committee. She has been married for eleven years and has two children. She and her family lives in Euless and she expressed her excitement about becoming a member. She looks forward to working with the Committee. Bill Golden attended the Photo Exhibit and indicated his interest in serving on the Committee. He enjoyed the photo exhibit and was very complimentary of the event. He expressed his appreciation to the Historical Committee for all the work they do with regards to the preservation of the area's 111.008 EHPC Meeting history. He has lived in Euless since 1956 and attended the Euless School as a youngster. Mr. Golden proudly reported that he still resides in the same house he was raised in on Vine Street. He was given . a Board and Commissions application to complete. Jimmy Payton gave a report on Calloway Cemetery: 1. He expressed his gratitude to the Chair, Betty Fuller, for her hard work and dedication to moving the agenda along with all the projects pertaining to the cemetery. He thanked everyone on the Sub-committee, Bill Byers, Iva & Robert Nail, Helen Payton, Beth and James Gathings, the Massey's, Helen Gleghorn, Mrs. Fuller and Weldon Cannon for their hard work with the census, etc. 2. Thanked Veva Lou Massey, she completed the 501-C application for tax exempt status. 3. Mr. Payton mentioned that his great-grandfather, Mood Fuller, was one of the original trustees of the cemetery. He thought it interesting that he and others such as Weldon Cannon, Bill Byers, Joe Cannon and Helen Gleghorn, Mood Fuller's descendants, are working to continue preservation work to the cemetery. Mood Fuller is buried at Calloway Cemetery. 4. About thirty people attended the first Board meeting to incorporate. The meeting was held at the First United Methodist Church of Euless at 10 a.m. on November 1, 2008. 5. There are ninety names on the cemetery contact list. Mr. Payton encouraged everyone to gather more names for the list. 6. The following people were elected to be on the Board of Trustees for the Cemetery: Jimmy Payton, Chair; David Massey, Weldon Cannon, Bill Byers and Betty Fuller. 7. The Board will hold one annual meeting on the first Saturday of every November. 8. It was discussed that a fence is needed in front of the cemetery along Calloway Cemetery Road. 9. Mr. Payton encouraged the Committee's continued support and assistance and again thanked them for their hard work. He acknowledged that without the Committee's leadership and dedication in working on the Calloway Cemetery project, the property would not be in the shape it's in now. DOCENT'S REPORT/RECRUITMENT 1. Sue Stover reported that eighty-five visitors signed the visitors log book at the Fuller House on November 8. 2008, the day of the Photo Exhibit. '. The Midway Elementary School tour on November 20, 2008 had one hundred and ten people. 3. The following Committee members volunteered to work the following areas during the Christmas at Heritage Park event: • Fuller House: Helen Payton (1-2 p.m.), Robert Nail (2-4 p.m.), Veva Lou Massey (4-5 p.m.). • Himes Log House: Donna Mickan (1-2 p.m.), Betty Fuller (2-3 p.m.), Donna Mickan (3-4 p.m.), Betty Fuller (4-5 p.m.). • McCoiniick Barn/Outdoor: Tom & Sue Stover (1-3 p.m.), David Massey (3-4 p.m.), Weldon Cannon (4-5 p.m.). • Photo Exhibit: Gary Fieldsend (1-5 p.m.), staff member (1-5 p.m.) • Corn Grinder: Joe Cannon and Tom and Sue Stover. • Floaters: Weldon Cannon, Troy Fuller, Navy Wright (if off from work). STATUS OF CURRENT PROJECTS 111008 EHPC Meeting 1. Calloway Cemetery: • James Gathings has been working at Calloway Cemetery over the last few months. He was very complimentary of the work that the City has done on the property. He stated that the property looks "first class, well manicured and professionally done." He further reported that due to the excellent job the Parks Department does on the property, he found three additional grave markers that were previously missed by the Census Sub-committee. Mr. Gathings encouraged everyone to go by and take a look at the cemetery when they get a chance. • Mr. Massey earnestly encouraged the Committee to come up with more names for the cemetery contact list. Through the mail out that Mr. Massey sent for the first Board meeting, Mr. Charlie Useton drove from Gainsville, Texas to the meeting. In addition, Mr. Massey was contacted by someone from Boston, Massachusetts as a result of the mail out he sent. • The Sub-committee will meet at 1 p.m. on November 25, 2008 at the Parks and Community Services building at 1314 Royal Parkway, Euless, 76040 to continue work on the census project. 2. Local and Texas State Historical Marker Project: • Permission has been obtained from the HEB-ISD to install the Euless School Texas State Historical Marker at South Euless Elementary School. Mrs. Fuller indicated that the City has agreed to pay for the marker. • Mr. Cannon is working on the dedication ceremony for the Horticulture Marker. The marker is located at Mr. Cannon's property across from South Euless Elementary School. • Staff handed out copies of the City designed seal for the local marker logo. A decision on the logo design will be postponed until a more convenient time. 3. Historical Photo Exhibit on November 8, 2008: • About one hundred and fifty people attended the event. The Mayor, City Manager. Deputy City Manager, City Secretary and other staff members attended the event as well. • Mrs. Fuller thanked the staff on behalf of the Committee for their hard work on the exhibit. She also thanked Mr. Fieldsend and Dan Clark for all the work they did for the project. Everyone agreed that it was a successful event. • Mr. Fieldsend did the Euless timeline that was displayed at the event and everyone thought it looked professionally done and accurate. • Mr. Fieldsend thanked the staff for their hard work in putting the Exhibit together. • Mrs. Fuller reported that Mayor Mary Lib Saleh was so pleased with the event that she indicated her wish that the Exhibit be displayed again during Heritage Park Christmas. Staff will have the exhibit prepared for display at the event. • Staff contacted the history departments at Euless Junior High and Trinity High School to encourage student participation in the event. Some of the history teachers at Euless Junior High and Trinity High School offered extra credit to their students to attend the Exhibit. Students were able to sign in and the sign in sheet was returned to the teachers. Mr. Fieldsend thought it would be a great idea to maintain contact with the local schools to encourage student participation in Committee projects. 4. Donations: • Ed and Beth Lewis donated a First United Methodist Church of Euless commemorative plate to the City Museum. Mrs. Fuller asked staff to write a thank you note to the Lewis' for their donation. 11008 EHPC Meeting 5. Artifacts Labeling Project: • Betty Fuller and Mavy Nell Trigg Wright will meet at the Fuller House on Monday, November 24, 2008 at 1 p.m. to work on the labeling project. MCCORMICK BARN/ OUTDOOR REPORTS HIMES LOG HOUSE REPORTS FULLER HOUSE REPORTS 1. David Massey brought up the fact that the player piano is such an interesting object for students. It was suggested that perhaps the doors in the House could be left open while the piano played for everyone to enjoy. The volume on the piano does not work and Troy Fuller offered to see about getting the volume fixed. Helen Payton and Norma Lively will meet with Troy Fuller for a quick lesson on how to work the player piano. STAFF REPORT 1. Asked if two judges from the Committee could judge the Historical Award for the Parade of Lights. ?. Staff thanked Mr. Clark for all his help on the Photo Exhibit. Staff further thanked Mr. Fieldsend for working so closely with them in getting photos prepared for the Exhibit. Mr. Fieldsend was always available and timely with everything that was sent to him. 3. Staff will provide corn for the grinder and have the base of the grinder fixed. 4. A live Christmas tree for the Himes Log House will be available the week after Thanksgiving. CHAIRMAN'S REPORT 1. Inquired if the Committee would be interested in having a guest speaker at some of the meetings. ?. There was a discussion about the usual annual Christmas luncheon. Mrs. Payton indicated her consent to have the Christmas luncheon at her home again this year. Donna Mickan made a motion to have the regular Committee meeting at Mr. and Mrs. Payton's home again this year with the Christmas luncheon following the meeting. Weldon Cannon seconded the motion. Motion approved. Mrs. Fuller will invite the new Committee members to attend the meeting and luncheon. The Mayor, City Manager and various other staff members are invited to the luncheon as well. 3. Mrs. Fuller reported that Sue Stover has been chosen by Council to be the next Co-chair of the Committee. Mrs. Mickan will continue working with the Historical Preservation Committee as she very much enjoys the work but due to her position as a Council Member. she may no longer serve as Co-chair. COMMITTEE REPORTS 111008 EHPC Meeting 1. Mrs. Payton brought divinities that Mr. Payton purchased at the First United Methodist Church of Euless' auction over the weekend to share with the Committee. 2. Sue Stover will remind David Brown about the Meadow Creek Elementary School tour on November 18, 2008. 3. Ralph Williamson previously volunteered to docent on December 2, 2008 during the Stoneaate Elementary School. He asked if someone else could docent that day. Doris Brown volunteered to docent in place of Mr. Williamson. 4. Robert Nail attended the 50th Anniversary of Euless Schools and was disappointed that.not a fair share of mention was allotted to the history of Euless High School by speakers at the function. He felt that the School District needs additional education about the history of Euless Schools and its significance to the area. It was mentioned that Mr. Cannon is working to help rectify the situation with the Texas State Historical Marker he is working on. Mrs. Fuller and others agreed that Mr. Nail's concern is valid. Mrs. Fuller mentioned that the Euless School was located at the current site from 1913 to 1955. This makes the South Euless Elementary School site the oldest school site of any H.E.B. school. 5. Mr. and Mrs. Gathings regrets they will not be at next month's meeting due to a prior engagement. 6. Mr. and Mrs. Stover are expecting the arrival of their first grandchild tomorrow, November 11. 2008. Members congratulated the Stover's on this happy occasion. Joe Cannon spoke about his 99 year old grandfather, who was very likely the first non-Indian to see Dallas. Mr. Cannon's grandfather was a very important part of the history of Dallas. 8. Sue Stover thouaht Joe Cannon's story about his Grandfather was very impressive. She thought that some members might be very interested in hearing stories like the one Mr. Cannon just shared and asked for a moment after the meeting to "chat" about it further. 9. Mrs. Stover's comment regarding Joe Cannon's historical "snippet" led to Mrs. Fuller's suggestion that perhaps the Committee would be interested in having one or two members share a short historical recollection at each of the meetings. Committee members thought that would be a Good idea. ADJOURNMENT David Massey made a motion for the meeting to adjourn. Navy Wright seconded the motion. Motion approved.
