Historical Preservation Committee
Minutes
March 9, 2009
CALL TO ORDER
Chair, Betty Fuller, called the meeting to order at 10:02 a.m. The meeting was held at City Hall in
the Pre-Council Chamber at 201 North Ector Drive, Euless, Texas.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES
The following corrections were made to February's minutes:
1. Under Status of Current Projects: item #4, bullet#3, Mr. Clark asked for the Committee's
help. Also under item #6, bullet #1, it should say Euless School marker instead of Euless
High School marker.
2. Under Staff Report, item#1, bullet #5, it should say, given to Helen Voss, instead of given the
Helen Voss.
3. Under the Chairman's report, item #1, it should say, one member of the Committee attended
instead of, one member of the Committee hasn't attended.
Donna Mickan made a motion to approve the minutes with the corrections. Don Martin seconded the
motion. Motion approved.
TREASURER'S REPORTS
Robert Nail reported the same balance as last month's, $7,190.22. Included in the balance is $447.00
for the Trigg tile. Donna Mickan clarified for the Committee that the City has a budget set aside for
some of the Committee's purchases. This budget is not what Mr. Nail reports on each month. She

indicated that the Committee should ask the City to purchase items needed for the Museum if they do
not want to deplete the Committee's funds.
DOCENT'S REPORT/RECRUITIVIENT
1. Sue and Tom Stover were docents at open house on Saturday, February 14, 2009. Nine
visitors toured the facility that day. Susan Ellis received docent training that day and even
gave her family a tour.
2. Lakewood Elementary School toured Heritage Park on Thursday, February 19, 2009. Mrs.
Gathings reported one-hundred and thirty visitors that day.
3. Bill Byers, David Massey and Gary Fieldsend volunteered to docent on Saturday, March 14,
2009 during open house. Helen Payton may also help that day.
4. Docents for open house on Saturday, April 11, 2009 are Shirley Mercer, Iva Nail and Betty
Fuller.
STATUS OF CURRENT PROJECTS
1. Calloway Cemetery:
• David Massey reported that the 501-C3 status has not been approved yet.
• Mr. Massey additionally asked that the Calloway Cemetery Committee projects be
kept separate from the projects the Historical Preservation Committee has been
working on.
• James Gathings has a new aerial of the cemetery that will help identify vacant plots on
the property.
• Betty Fuller asked the census Sub-Committee if they would contact Ray McCoy with
the Tarrant County Historical Commission. Mr. McCoy owns heat sensitive equipment
used for detection of bodies under ground. He offered to help with the census of
Calloway Cemetery for free. The Sub-Committee will contact Mr. McCoy.
• Mr. Massey reminded the Committee of the need for more names for the mailing list.
Iva and Robert Nail indicated that they would turn in a list of contacts in the near
future.
2. City Website Update:
• Dan Clark reported that Joe Umphress' bio has been sent to staff to upload onto the
website by the end of the week.
• Susan Crim provided the list of previous Council Members for the Council page. A
copy of the list was passed around for the Committee's review. Robert Nail suggested
that Mayors be included in the list as well. Dan Clark will make the appropriate
updates prior to posting the list. Mr. Clark will also write an introduction piece for the
Council page.
• The Committee was asked if release foiins need to be obtained from currently living
Mayors and/or Council Members prior to posting their bios online. Committee
members were doubtful that this was needed. Staff was asked to confirm whether
releases need to be obtained and report back to the Committee.

• Dan Clark started work on a display of Mrs. Ruth Millican to be placed at the Ruth
Millican Center. Norma Lively was asked to research information for the project. Mrs.
Lively obtained information about Mrs. Millican and emailed it to staff and Dan Clark.
Staff also indicated that photos of Mrs. Ruth Millican and other family members are in
the files at the Parks and Community Services building.
• On display at the Library is a photograph of the first stop light in Euless. Donna
Mickan mentioned that Donna Gooch with the Euless Library did a lot of research for
the project.
• Dan Clark passed around an old photograph of several people. The Committee was
asked if anyone recognized the photograph or identify the people in it. No one
recognized the photo or the people in it.
4. Historical Marker Project:
• Weldon Cannon reported on the dedication ceremony required by the Texas State
Historical Commission for the Horticulture Marker. He mentioned June 14, 2009 at
about 2:30 p.m. as a possible date and time for the ceremony. Mr. Cannon indicated
his desire that the ceremony be kept as simple as possible, however, he left the
decision up to the Committee as this would be a Committee event. Various
suggestions were made and the Committee was agreeable to Mr. Cannon's
proposition. Staff will help with set up for the event.
• Weldon Cannon will meet with staff to review other City's local marker programs and
tailor one for the Euless local marker program.
5. Labeling Project:
• Mavy Wright, Helen Gleghorn and Betty Fuller will meet at the Fuller House on
March 13, 2008 at 1 p.m. to work on the project.
• Staff acquired descriptions from Betty Fuller for several photos and artifacts in the
Fuller House. Name plates have been made and placed with each concurrent object in
the Museum.
6. Acquisition Committee and Donations:
• Council Member Leon Hogg donated the following items to the Museum:
a. Shovels used at various ground breaking ceremonies: one used for Arbor Daze,
one for Villages of Bear Creek (1991) and one for Veteran's Field (2003).
b. One of the first Arbor Daze T-shirt.
c. An old knife sharpener manufactured by McCormick-Deering.
d. An old cast iron campfire cooking pot.
e. Official City of Euless 1972 Fiesta Week proclamation by Mayor Krause.
Troy Fuller made a motion to accept Mr. Hogg's donations. Helen Gleghorn seconded
the motion. Motion approved.
• Betty Fuller displayed several items she acquired for the Museum:
a. An 1877 mouse trap with a reference article dated Thursday, September 14,
1961 (Lodi California News Sentinel).
b. A Reliable Egg Scale Candler with electric cord (ca: 1920's) mfg. by Reliable
Manufacture Co., Los Angeles, CA.
c. An old egg scale.
• Bill Byers displayed several items acquired from Loreen Snyder for the Museum.

• Staff will set up the tent and photo display in the Historical tent. The Committee will
man the tent during all Arbor Daze hours. Staff will have a sign up sheet for the
Committee at next month's meeting. Staff will meet with Gary Fieldsend and Dan
Clark about the display.

CHAIRMAN'S REPORT
1. Norma Lively and Helen Voss could not make it to the meeting due to prior engagements.
?. Reported that the Mayor asked her to purchase items needed for the Museum and the City will
reimburse her. Mrs. Fuller purchased several items for$75.00 (see list under Acquisition
Committee and Donations, bullet#3). Staff submitted a greensheet to finance for
reimbursement for the purchases.
3. Reported that Heritage Park was vandalized the morning of the meeting. Seven fence boards
were broken and there were some graffiti. Parks and Recreation staff was aware of the
incident and were on site to correct the problem. Mrs. Fuller inquired as to the security of the
Park, staff indicated that the flood lights are on at night and the infrared security system is in
place and the light posts are checked periodically to make sure they are on at night.
4. Mentioned she received a very nice note from David Massey. It was mentioned that another
fieldtrip could be lined up for the Committee. Mrs. Fuller suggested that the Committee could
also tour the Civil War Museum and the White Settlement historical facilities.
5. Displayed a 2004 water bill insert that listed an old wooden ice box as one of the items the
Committee was looking to acquire for the Museum.
6. A 2009 list of Dallas' Historical Society Cemeteries was passed out for the Committee's
review. It was brought up that a similar tour of Euless and other nearby cemeteries could be
put together and offered to the Community. Committee members were generally agreeable
that this could be a future project for the Committee.
COMMITTEE REPORTS
1. New members Doyle Brown and Susan Ellis were asked to give a brief introduction.
• Mrs. Ellis mentioned she's lived in Euless since the 1990's and grew up in Amarillo.
• Mr. Brown has been in Euless since 1966. He also displayed a shirt he had
embroidered with the historical logo on the front and the new local marker medallion
on the back. Committee members were very impressed with the design.

2. Helen Payton was given a candle stick phone for her birthday and she in turn donated it to the
Museum. Mrs. Payton has wanted a candle stick phone for the Museum for a long time.
3. Council Member Donna Mickan briefly mentioned the huge development just south of the
Calloway Cemetery where Bird's Fort used to be located. She indicated that the addition will
enhance the location of the Calloway Cemetery.
4. Susan Ellis offered the following suggestions on advertising and improving public awareness
of Heritage Park and open house hours:
• Mentioned more advertising to local public schools. Staff indicated that area
elementary schools will be contacted and provided with information to distribute to
children.
• Suggested including open house information in the myeuless.com email update that
Betsy Deck sends out.
• Put up a sign advertising Museum hours, etc. in the Genealogy/History room at the
Library.
• Mrs. Ellis' husband volunteered to put out and pick up the open house signs each
month for the Committee.
Committee members were agreeable to Mrs. Ellis' suggestions and were appreciative of her
and her husband's volunteer efforts.
5. Bill Golden compiled a list of old newspaper obituaries of local citizens dating back to 1903.
He indicated that over forty of the burials were at Calloway Cemetery and dates to before
1940. He donated the folder of articles to the Committee.
6. Donna Mickan updated the Committee on the question of inactive members on the Committee
that was discussed at last month's meeting. Mrs. Mickan spoke with the City Secretary's
office and was informed that members are appointed for life and can not be removed from the
Committee. The member in question had been contacted by the City and it was indicated by
the member that she is not available to attend meetings during the day but is available during
evenings and weekends if the Committee would contact her when they need help. There was
a brief discussion about the situation. Staff mentioned that minutes are sent to all members
each month and the minutes include all areas where the Committee needs help. Staff was
asked to send a docent packet to the member in question so she can sign up to attend open
house and special tours during weekends and evenings.
ADJOURNMENT
David Massey made a motion for the meeting to adjourn. James Gathings seconded the motion.
Motion approved.
