HomeMy WebLinkAbout2009-05-18 Historical Preservation Committee Minutes May 18, 2009 CALL TO ORDER Chair, Betty Fuller, called the meeting to order at 10:05 a.m. The meeting was held at City Hall in the Pre-Council Chamber at 201 North Ector Drive, Euless, Texas. MEMBERS PRESENT Betty Fuller, Helen Voss, Don Martin, David Massey, Gary Fieldsend, Ralph Williamson, Helen Gleghorn, Joe Cannon, Weldon Cannon, Robert Nail, Billy Byers, Helen Payton, Bill Golden,Norma Lively, Faye Stinneford, Doyle Brown, Iris Elliott, Beth Gathings and James Gathings. RECOGNITION OF VISITORS Sandra Crowley Beth Cusack STAFF PRESENT Ray McDonald, Director of Parks and Community Services Trish McDonald, Recreation Staff Intern Michael Davenport, Recreation Superintendant Ofa '`Mary" Faiva-Siale, Projects Coordinator APPROVAL OF MINUTES The following additions/corrections were made to the minutes from April's meeting: 1. Betty Fuller made a correction under the Fuller House Update, item #2: the estimate that Troy Fuller gave is to fix the pump organ and not the Victrola. 2. Doyle Brown made a correction to a statement made by Mrs. Fuller under Fuller House Update, item#2; Mr. Brown indicated that he does not have an Edison Victrola to donate to the Museum. Don Martin made a motion to approve the minutes with the additions. Ralph Williamson seconded the motion. Motion approved. TREASURER'S REPORTS Treasurer, Robert Nail, reported a total balance of$6,521.22. VISITOR'S REPORT HPC MTG.051809 Page 1 1. President of the Euless Library Foundation, Sandra Crowley,thanked Mavy Nell Trigg Wright and the Treasurer, Robert Nail for the final payment they received for the Trigg Tile. Ms. Crowley also thanked the Committee for their generous support of the History Wall project from its inception. She described the process of making the tiles and indicated that 62% of the project has been funded. Mrs. Fuller encouraged those who haven't purchased a tile to consider buying one. 2. Beth Cusack introduced herself to the Committee. She has two children in elementary school and has lived in Euless since 1999. She graduated from Trinity College San Antonio. She requested and was given an application to become a member of the Committee. Committee members were excited about the prospect of having Ms. Cusack become a member. DOCENT'S REPORT/RECRUITMENT 1. Staff reported twenty-four visitors during open house on May 9, 2009. Beth Gathings brought several family members and friends to the open house. She mentioned that Donna Mickan gave a very good presentation of the Log House. 2. Fifty-five children from the Midway Recreation Center summer camp program will be touring Heritage Park on August 4, 2009 between 10 a.m. and noon. Weldon Cannon, Joe Cannon, Bill Golden, Helen Payton, Faye Stinneford, Helen Voss and Betty Fuller volunteered to docent that day. 3. The Midway Recreation Center summer camp children will also tour Heritage Park on August 6, 2009 between 10 a.m. and noon. Iris Elliott, Norma Lively, Faye Stinneford, Helen Voss and Betty Fuller volunteered to docent that day. 4. Volunteers will be recruited to docent during open house on June 13, July 11, August 8 and September 12, 2009 at the June meeting. STATUS OF CURRENT PROJECTS 1. Sub-Committees: Dan Clark asked the Chair and Committee for names of the various Sub- Committees and those serving on each Sub-Committee for the records. It could not be recalled and staff was asked to research the subject and report back to Mr. Clark. 2. Calloway Cemetery: • David Massey reported that the cemetery has been granted tax-exempt status. • While working at the cemetery one day, Weldon Cannon met a couple who were looking for one of their descendant's grave. Mr. Cannon looked up the burial location on his charts and indicated the location to the couple. Both were ecstatic to have found their relative's grave and gave their contact infoluiation to Mr. Cannon indicating their intention to possibly make a donation to the cemetery. Mr. Cannon gave Mr. Massey the couple's contact information. • James Gathings, Bill Byers and Bill Golden of the Census Sub-Committee will meet on June 10, 2009 at 10 a.m. to work on the census. • Members of the Census Sub-Committee will also meet on June 24, 2009 at the Parks and Community Services building at 10 a.m. to document the census foinis previously collected by the Sub-Committee. HPC MTG. 051809 Page 2 • Helen Gleghom inquired about repairs to the Tabernacle as its condition is deteriorating. David Massey indicated that the Board of Trustees has restoration work to the tabernacle on its agenda. 3. City Website Update: • Dan Clark has emailed the list of previous council members to City staff for posting. A copy of the list was passed around for the Committee to review and proof. • Mr. Clark and Mrs. Fuller encouraged the Committee to review the historical page as it is very rich in content. • Mr. Clark indicated that research about the Ruth Millican display is ongoing. • Mr. Clark further encouraged the Committee to send old photographs they may have in their personal collections to staff to scan and include in the Historical Committees files. • Sandra Crowley emailed staff between six to ten historical photographs and staff has entered the photos in to the database. 4. Historical Display/s: • The 1931 quilt that Helen Gleghorn donated to the Museum will be displayed at the Library. Helen Voss together with Helen Gleghorn will research the cost to frame the quilt for display. • One of the things that piqued Beth Cusack's interests in joining the Historical Committee was one of the displays she saw at the Library. 5. Historical Marker Project: • Weldon Cannon and the Committee agreed to have the Horticultural Marker dedication on Sunday, June 14, 2009 at 2:30 p.m. Helen Payton, Helen Voss, Ralph Williamson, Bill Byers, Iris Elliott and Faye Stinneford volunteered to help serve in various areas during the event. A few more volunteers are still needed to help. • Sandra Crowley indicated that she will begin researching information for a Texas State Historical Marker for the First Baptist Church of Euless. • Weldon Cannon hopes to acquire historical markers for the following in the future: Stores in Euless, Medicine, Aviation and others. 6. Labeling Project: • Members of the Photo, Acquisition and Display Sub-Committees scheduled to meet at the Fuller House at 1 p.m. either on May 29, 2009 or on June 19, 2009 to work on various projects. 7. Acquisition Sub-Committee and Donations: • Robert Nail may donate or loan a metal toy motorcycle with a side car that he received as a gift on his sixth birthday. • Helen Payton donated two Sear's Catalogues, one from 1985, and a Victor adding machine to the Museum. A donation foun will be completed for the donation. Staff will take the items to the Fuller House. • Beth Gathings donated a 19'76 Birds Fort Bicentennial medal and a donation foiIn was acquired for the item. • It was mentioned that a gourd is needed for display at the well. 8. Arbor Daze: HPC MTG. 051809 Page 3 • Helen Voss and Faye Stinneford worked the last shift on Sunday, April 26, 2009 during Arbor Daze. They reported that the historical tent had only a couple of visitors during the hours they volunteered. • Staff thanked the Committee for their hard work and help with the Arbor Daze historical tent. • Betty Fuller suggested that perhaps wearing costumes during the event might generate more interest. She thanked the City and the Committee for their support during the event. • Joe Cannon thought that the crowd this year was a little different than the crowd from last year. He thought there were more adults this year and they displayed more interest in the historical aspects of the displays than the younger crowd of last year. • People thought the Starbucks stand helped draw in the crowd. Staff indicated that the same arrangements can be made for next year since it worked so well. 9. Display Sub-Committee: • Bill Byers reported that the Cannon Tractor tires have been aired up and the tractor moved outside and placed under the barn shed. • All items on loan from Loreen Snyder has been acquired and re-located to Heritage Park. Bill Golden has photographed all the artifacts and a loan form will be acquired from Ms. Snyder for the artifacts. 10. Historical "Snippet": • Bill Golden read an article from the Arlington Journal dated October 15, 1903. MCCORMICK BARN /OUTDOOR UPDATE HIMES LOG HOUSE UPDATE FULLER HOUSE UPDATE 1. A discussion was held regarding the cost to fix the pump organ. Doyle Brown indicated that he has a friend who can fix the organ possibly for free. After a brief discussion, Faye Stinneford made a motion to allow Doyle Brown's friend to fix the organ, James Gathings seconded the motion. All were in favor, motion approved. STAFF REPORT CHAIRMAN'S REPORT 1. Betty Fuller offered condolences to Mrs. Payton on behalf of the Committee on the recent loss of her mother. Mrs. Payton very much appreciated the gesture. 2. Reported that Susan Ellis could not attend the meeting. COMMITTEE REPORTS 1. New member Iris Elliott introduced herself to the Committee. She has lived in Euless since 1957 and her husband worked for the City of Euless for many years. Mrs. Elliott is acquainted with many of the current Committee members. HPC MTG. 051809 Page 4 2. Bill Byers thanked the City for acquiring a 100'garden hose for use at Heritage Park. Mr. Byers and Bill Golden have done and are planning to do a lot of work on the garden and needed the water hose. Doyle Brown agreed to help Mr. Byers and Mr. Golden with the garden. ADJOURNMENT Faye Stinneford made a motion for the meeting to adjourn. Helen Voss seconded the motion. Motion approved.
