HomeMy WebLinkAbout2009-10-12 Historical Preservation Committee Minutes October 12, 2009 CALL TO ORDER Chair, Betty Fuller, called the meeting to order at 10:01 a.m. The meeting was held at City Hall in the Pre-Council Chamber at 201 North Ector Drive, Euless, Texas. MEMBERS PRESENT Doris Brown, Norma Lively, Dan Clark, Helen Voss, Betty Fuller, Weldon Cannon, Billy Byers, Iris Elliott, Bill Golden, Mavy Wright, David Massey, Veva Lou Massey, Gary Fieldsend, Joe Cannon, Robert Nail, Helen Payton, Doyle Brown, Sue Stover, Tom Stover, Donna Mickan, James Gathings, Beth Gathings, Ralph Williamson and Don Martin. Mrs. Fuller indicated that Elizabeth Wilcox has offered several times to donate the first TV set owned in Euless, she has not made the donation as of yet. Bill Byers made a motion to approve the minutes. Helen Voss seconded the motion. Motion approved. Barbara Collier submitted her application to join the Historical Preservation Committee. 2. Mary Young asked for the Committee's neip and or direction in finding out information about 'tier ancestors who lived in the area. She indicated that they have lived around Fuller Wiser on a street called r lemimt around the i'j3'i s_ Neither his. `Y oun2 s amilb nor Fieinina Street was familiar to key members of the Committee. Mrs. Fuller referred Ms. Young to various contacts around the area, including the Dallas Public Library Genealogy Department. DOCENT'S REPORT/RECRUITMENT 1. Norma Lively reported that sixty-one people signed the register during open house on Saturday, October 10, 2009. The large crowd was due to the Greek Festival next door and it's possible that more people toured Heritage Park but did not sign the register. 2. Midway Park Elementary School will tour Heritage Park on Tuesday, October 13, 2009 at 9:30 a.m. Bill Golden, Sue and Tom Stover, Helen Payton, Norma Lively, Bill Byers and Betty Fuller will serve as docents. 3. Stonegate Elementary School will tour the museum on Thursday, October 15, 2009 at 9:30 a.m. Bill Byers, Susan Ellis, Beth Gathings and Betty Fuller will serve as docents. 4. David & Veva Lou Massey, Faye Stinneford, Betty Fuller and Helen Voss volunteered to docent during regular open house on November 14, 2009. STATUS OF CURRENT PROJECTS 1. Library History Wall: Betty Fuller passed out a list of tiles still available for purchase. The list included sample photos of tiles already completed along with a price list. A display of the completed tiles is at the Library. The Committee was encouraged to go by and take a look at them. 2. Calloway Cemetery: A. Calloway Cemetery Association: • David Massey passed out copies of the Association's current newsletter. • The next meeting will be on November 7, 2009 at 10 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church of Euless. The meeting is open to the public. • There have been four burials at Calloway. • Bill Byers will be working on repairs to the Tabernacle. He asked for volunteers to help with the project on October 31, 2009 around 10 a.m. • David Massey indicated the need to replace the chain link fence currently at the property. L of the total burials at Calloway as well as a sketch of the layout. He will double check and cross reference e'ertithiny with previous records and the Committee. • tetIV Fuller indicated chat ilrVU_fltC Subcommittee's survey of th e p roperty three years ago, its estimated that roughly seven hundred graves are at the cemetery. • The oldest grave on the property is Richard Calloway's, he was buried there in 1874. Bill Golden mentioned that Calloway might have originally been a D-aveyard for slaves. Joe Cannon ad_a ..an that if my mother were alive she would tell you that. Mr. Calloway had two black slave children that were buried.. " at the site and that Mr. Calloway requested to be buried beside them when he passed away. It was also mentioned that Mr. Calloway's wife and daughter were buried at the Bear Creek cemetery. 3. Donations and Acquisitions: • Mayor Mary Lib Saleh donated an old tin measuring cup. A donation form was acquired for the Mayor's donations of the wooden snow shovel, the candle mold and the tin measuring cup. Mr. Golden will email photographs of the three items to staff for inclusion in the files. • Wayne & Betty Priddy donated a set of cotton carder to the Museum. A donation form was acquired for the items. Mr. Golden will photograph the item and email it to staff • Council Member Leon Hogg re-assembled the new spinning wheel. He hand made some of the parts that were missing in order to make the spinning wheel work properly. The wheel is now displayed at Heritage Park. 4. Website and Display Projects: • All the photos displayed at the Library are also posted on line. • The current Library display is of the Greater Southwest Airport. Mr. Clark included a fare and flight schedule from that time. Committee members thought it a great idea to include the schedule and fare list. 5. Historical Marker Project: • Weldon Cannon is working on an application for a Texas State Historical Marker on "Aviation and Euless". • Weldon Cannon gave a report on the status of the Euless local marker program. A cut out of what the marker will look like was shown to the Committee. Handouts with preliminary guidelines and an application were developed by staff and Mr. Cannon. Some Committee members had questions concerning the information on the handouts. Various suggestions and inquiries were mentioned. Mr. Cannon clarified that the handout is a draft and the project is still in its editing phase. Everyone was asked to take home the handouts and bring their suggestions to the next meeting. Once the details are worked out and the Committee approves everything, the project must be presented to Council for approval as well. Regarding payment for a marker; once a person is approved to receive one, the individual will make payment directly to the foundry rather than having the City act as a third party with regards to receiving, submitting payments and handling receipts, etc., etc. 6. Evolving History: • Tom Stover met with Mike Collins, Director of Economic Development, about historical information for the Evolving History project. Mike Collins felt that the magnitude of the project may require additional help. He offered to see about acquiring an intern to help gather and compile the information for the Committee. Mr. Cannon will get together with Mr. Clark and Mr. Stover regarding the information he has put together. Robert aii made a motion for Mr. Stover to proceed with the project and to coordinate with Mike Coiiins on acquiring an intern to help with the project. Veva Lou Massey seconded the motion. Motion approved. • Dan Clark further mentioned the idea of putting together a history on sub-division names, street names. etc. Again, it was indicated that Weldon Cannon has acquired extensive on the information he has gathered. Historical Snitppet: As children attending Euless High School in the 1930' Bill Byers retailed how the school didn't have a school bus and when they went on field trips to the Texas State Fair, 7;-)(13, �._ 7)1 6 Sam Mills used to "...come up on his one and half ton truck, loaded up all the kids in the back and everyone rode standing up all the way..." there. Some of the members remembered those days and that no one thought anything about the kids riding in the back of that truck back then. MCCORMICK BARN /OUTDOOR UPDATE 1. Staff was asked about display signs for all the outdoor farm implements at Heritage Park. The Committee was asked to give the text for each piece of equipment to staff in order to have the signs made. HIMES LOG HOUSE UPDATE FULLER HOUSE UPDATE STAFF REPORT CHAIRMAN'S REPORT 1. Reported that Helen Gleghorn, Susan Ellis and Faye Stinneford could not attend the meeting. 2. The Committee discussed having their annual Christmas luncheon at Texas Star this year. Several ideas were mentioned, including menu, set up and prices. City Manager, Gary McKamie offered for the city to pay for the luncheon on the committee's behalf. It was decided that Committee members would be allowed to bring a guest as they have done in previous years and the luncheon will be set up buffet style. The Committee appreciated the City Manager's offer. 3. Reminded the Committee about the annual Tarrant County Historical Summit. 4. Thanked everyone who served as docents during open house on Saturday, October 10, 2009. It was a very busy day. COMMITTEE REPORTS 1. Bill Golden had a copy of a post card with a picture of an Appaloosa stallion from the mid 1960's. The horse, called Top Hat H, was owned by the Triangle H Ranch of Euless and he was a grand champion halter horse.
