HomeMy WebLinkAbout2007-09-06 EULESS LIBRARY BOARD MINUTES September 6,2007 Chairman Mike McGehee called the meeting to order at 7:02 p.m. MEMBERS PRESENT STAFF PRESENT OTHERS Mike McGehee Kate Lyon Denise Feeley Barney Snitz Karan Jasper Betty Fuller LuAnn Portugal Kacey Bess Lucinda Hoffman-Garcia-absent Marcia Brown Adriane Weinstein DISPOSITION OF THE MINUTES: The Chairman asked for a motion to be made to accept the August 2, 2007 minutes. Barney Snitz made the motion to accept the minutes, and LuAnn Portugal seconded the motion. REPORT FROM THE LIBRARY ADMINISTRATOR: Kate presented the August monthly statistics. Our numbers continue to show increases in Circulation and database usage. Kate announced the new Library Board photos are in the frames and look wonderful. We have received the new color printer and Tammi is now producing the monthly newsletter in a color format that looks very professional. Summer Reading Club is officially over and was a big success. We had 1416 in Youth and 440 in Adults for a total of 1856. Last year we had 1366 in youth sign up and this was the first year for the Adult Summer Reading program. We handed out 50 prizes with coupons in the Youth Department and in Adult we gave out coffee mugs with donated coffee from Starbucks, Sunset Cruise on Lake Grapevine and a Weekend Getaway package at the Embassy Suites. The theme for next year is"50 Years of SRC." Verlon Thompson program was a big success with 152 in attendance. The Mayor would like for him to be a yearly event. We participated with the Parks Department Fishing Derby and handed out 200 of our famous flashing fish on August 18th On September 15 we will hand out bottled water with"Spot The Dog"on the label for the kids at the Bike Rodeo. September is Library Card Sign-Up Month and we will be handing out promotional items and we will have a drawing for two DVDs. Martin Rivera will be here on September 29 to do a bilingual story time in the Meeting Room. He will be presenting El Cuento which is Spanish for The Story. He will also go to Oakwood Terrace on Friday, September 28th for story time with the 3rd and 4th grade students. Board applications are due to the City Secretary's office by September 14th. On September 24th interviews will be held at City Hall by the City Council and the Mayor. The City Council and Mayor has asked each department to do a presentation at the end of the City Council meeting. The Library will do a power point presentation on September 11th of activities during 2007 and hand out some of our promotional items. Good news from Loan Star—this year we have been allocated$19,000. We will have our plan of action into the state at the end of October Page 2 September 6,2007 Library Board Minutes Bedford City Council voted not to out source the Bedford Library and will begin renovation on the old Food Lion store that will be the new location for the library. DISCUSSIONS: Kacey Bess announced that the Friend of the Library book sale is September 21st thru 23`d. The group could use more books. If anyone can donate please do—if not for this sale for the future book sales. Mike McGehee reports that it looks like ELF will be moving forward with their new art project for the Library. The artist is working on a sample tile that should be available for the September ELF Board and Annual Meeting on Thursday, September 27th. Betty Fuller and Weldon Cannon are scheduled to be on Good Morning Texas at 9am on Tuesday, September 18th to talk about Tarrant County History. Barney Snitz reported he really enjoyed the Verlon Thompson program and would like to help with the Friends of the Library book sale. Marcia Brown reported the sad news about her nephew in Iraq. Marcia also reports that Trinity High School is working with the seniors with new books to help them with the TAKS testing. Adriane Weinstein volunteered to help with this program. LuAnn Portugal reports that she is very impressed with the tone that Kate has set for the library. CITIZEN INPUT: Denise Feeley reports that she very much enjoyed the Verlon Thompson program. The room and the tables looked wonderful and the music was great. She also shared that she had been in Boston and went to the library. Coming back to our library really made her appreciate what a nice,clean and beautiful library we have in Euless. ADJOURNMENT: The Chairman asked for a motion to adjourn. The motion was made by Kacey Bess and seconded by Barney Snitz.
