HomeMy WebLinkAbout2006-10-05 EULESS LIBRARY BOARD MINUTES October 5, 2006 Chairman Mike McGehee called the meeting to order at 7:02 p.m. MEMBERS PRESENT STAFF PRESENT OTHERS Mike McGehee Kate Lyon Barney Snitz Karan Jasper Betty Fuller LuAnn Portugal Chris McAllister Marcia Brown Adriane Weinstein DISPOSITION OF THE MINUTES: The Chairman asked for a motion to be made to accept the September minutes. Betty Fuller made the motion to accept the minutes, and Barney Snitz seconded the motion. REPORT FROM THE LIBRARY ADMINISTRATOR: Kate Lyon reported that Library statistics continue to increase each month. We had a wonderful month in September with three great programs. Kate Lyon and Betty Fuller attended the NTRLS Systems Assembly Meeting on Thursday, September 28, 2006 in Decatur. The speaker was Jeff Crilley a reporter from Channel 4. NTRLS reported that the systems office is in very good shape. The Friends of the Library had a very successful book sale making over $3000 in three days. The sale was September 29-October 1, 2006. We have a new part-time Library Aide, Amanda Tones, in the Circulation Department. We are looking to expand our Spanish collection with popular adult books called fotonovelas. The books are inexpensive paper books that do not hold up for very long. We will not be putting these books on hold. Kate asked for input from the Board on these books. Kate Lyon asked the board for their input on discontinuing the Suggestion Box. Most of the suggestions are vulgar comments. Kate Lyon is meeting next week with Artsnet to schedule Masterworks programming for the comi:ig year. It is our plan to use the Meeting Room more this year and book more family oriented programs. Kate asked for suggestions from the Board. Chris McAllister suggested contacting UTA and for added diversity the Tongan community here in Euless. Marcia Brown suggested Book Fare and the arts department at Trinity High School DISCUSSIONS: Fotonovela Books: The board would like to expand our Spanish collection but would like to have someone translate a couple of the books for them. After discussion by the board it was decided to make a motion to support the Library Administrator, Kate Lyon's, decision regarding adding the books to the collection. u Page 2 October 5, 2006 Library Board Minutes DISCUSSIONS (continued): LuAnn made a motion to support Kate Lyon's decision to put in the Library as long as the books are not easily accessible for children to reach. Marcia Brown seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously. Suggestion Box: The Board would like to look at other alternatives such has having signs in the Library that encourage patrons to ask an employee for a form. After discussion by the Board it was decided to make a motion regarding their suggestions. Marcia Brown made a motion to eliminate the suggestion box and implement signage that says "Comments and concerns are important to us please ask an employee for a form." Betty Fuller seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously. Mike McGehee reported on Euless Library Foundation officers: . Sandra Crowley, President Mike McGehee, Vice-President Norann Lustfield, Secretary Sandy Mosser, Treasurer Barney Snitz reported that the Euless Civilian Fire Fighter Association will be meeting at Fire Administration Building this year. Their project this year is to keep the City Administration grounds clean and attractive. Barney Snitz also asked if it would be possible to talk with the City Secretary's office to have Denise Feeley made an "Honorary" Board member. She applied for the board but is not eligible since she lives in Fort Worth. Kate Lyon said she would check with Susan Crim, City Secretary for the City of Euless. CITIZEN INPUT: None ADJOURNMENT: The Chairman asked for a motion to adjourn. The motion was made by Marcia Brown and seconded by Adriane Weinstein.
