HomeMy WebLinkAbout2003-06-05 EULESS LIBRARY BOARD MINUTES June 5, 2003 Chairman Mike McGehee called the meeting to order at 7:05 p.m in the Library Board Room and the meeting was moved to the Twin Bridge Library. MEMBERS PRESENT STAFF PRESENT OTHERS Mike McGehee JoAnn Rogers Kelly Sobozak Cline Barney Snitz Sherry Knight Roxanne Plamondon LuAnn Portugal Betty Fuller Marcia Brown Kathy Grove Kate Lyon DISPOSITION OF THE MINUTES: The Chairman asked for a motion to be made to accept the May Board Minutes with amendment that Marcia Brown was present at the May meeting. Betty Fuller made the motion to accept the minutes,and Barney Snitz seconded the motion. REPORT FROM THE LIBRARY ADMINISTRATOR: June 2003 Circulation Stats: Items Circulated 37603 Traffic Count 22762 Library Accounts 47344 Active Users%of Library Accounts 28% Library Holdings 101191 Interlibrary Loan(requests) 74 Public Service Stats: Reference 2807 Directional 909 Computer Related 659 Total 4375 Computer Usage: Word Processing Hours Used 0 Internet Database: Hours Used 0 Program Attendance: Adult 100 Youth 1877 Total 1977 JoAnn introduced Kelly Sobozak Cline and Roxanne Plamondon to the Library Board. Kelly was hired with grant funding for Twin Bridge Library. Kelly reports that the Friends of the Library purchased bookshelves and lanyards. Each library card that is issued is attached to a lanyard. Kelly reports fourteen children signed up for the Summer Reading Club at Twin Bridge.program,and the apartment management company will sponsor an ice cream party for the children. We have approximately 15-25 patrons daily at the Library. Normal hours are 3:30pm to 6:30pm but the summer hours are from to 2:00pm to 5:00pm Monday through Friday. Roxanne Plamondon is the Manager at Twin Bridge Apartments and has been very instrumental in the implementation of the mini-library. The owners of the apartments have donated the space,pay for the utilities,put in an alarm system with monitored motion detection,and offer the services of the maintenance department. Roxanne reports that vandalism is down and she has children from the apartments waiting every morning to see what time the library will open. The apartment has a complex curfew that is enforced. Children under the age of 18 years have to be in their apartment by 8:00pm on school nights and 9:30pm on the weekends. Sherry Knight reports that she had a very good meeting with Catholic Charities regarding their ESL services at Twin Bridge. They will work with the immigrants to help with communication and proficiency in the English language as well as their own language. The Library will support Catholic Charities and their efforts. We have added ESL testing software to one computer and we are working on more resources for adults. Karan Jasper has written a letter to Home Depot asking their help with a park bench and decorative planters for the entry to the Library at Twin Bridge. JoAnn Rogers reports at Euless Public Library the landscaping has been evaluated by Ray McDonald and Johnnie Green since our last meeting. The irrigation system has been repaired and the Parks Department pickup on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Karan had a Teen Court Volunteer here for two weeks and he picked up the trash and cleaned the walkways,and the Parks Department cleaned the walkways with the pressure sprayer. We have added a coffee service for the public in the Reference Department that is a big success. The Summer Reading Club has 430 signed up and Shannon Oram has 110 Junior Volunteers. The summer programs have been a huge success with high attendance at each event. UNFINISHED BUSINESS: Still working on interviews with Staff on ideas of how to best utilize the staff vacancy. NEW BUSINESS: 1. Betty Fuller and Barney Snitz attended the North Texas Regional Meeting. 2. JoAnn Rogers asked to do a Pilot Program to share catalogs with North Tarrant County. 3. Betty Fuller elected as Lay Rep for NTRLS and Barney Snitz as the alternate. Their terms would run until August 2005. 4. Motion not to meet on July 3`1 for official meeting,but meet on July 10`h for a workshop. Motion made by Marcia Brown and seconded by Betty Fuller. DISCUSSION: 1. LuAnn Portugal reported the Library Foundation Reception with the Mayor was wonderful. She did point out the Euless history book has an incorrect date on the statehood of Texas. This was also the kickoff for the Library Foundation Membership Drive. Sandra Crowley has done a wonderful job on the membership project. 2. Marcia Brown has accepted the position of Librarian at Trinity High School. CITIZEN INPUT: None ADJOURNMENT: The Chairman asked for a motion to adjourn.
