Additional Comments from JoAnn Rogers:
Every Staff Member attended the TLA Conference in Dallas which was held April 23 —April 26
as well as several Library Board Members. The conference was informative, and Betty Fuller
won 6 books at the TLA Conference for the Library.
As the April Check Out Explosion chart illustrates, more books were checked out in April than
ever before, and Computer Usage has also increased. Typically and historically, Friday is the
slowest day of the week while Monday is the busiest. This information is being kept in mind as
the Library considers how to best utilize the same number of hours it is open and available to the
public.
The Teen Room has the furniture and decorative lighting used for the Teen Poetry Slam and
Coffeehouse in April. This has proven to be popular as the Teens continue to use this area which
has cut down on the noise. The Library has asked for a security camera so activity in
that room may be monitored at the desk. For security reasons, it would be nice to get it.
As the newsletter shows, there are many activities planned for the month of May: a Masterworks
presentation of the Fort Worth Opera's Hansel and Gretel, a Mother-Daughter Tea, a presentation
of Pecos Bill, a Genealogy Lock In, and the start of the Summer Reading Program. For additional
activities and information, please refer to this month's newsletter.
As the Computer Usage has increased, the Library has prepared a form to hand to patrons who
have offensive material on the screen. The form references the Texas Penal Code 43.22.and
warns that an offense of this code is a Class A misdemeanor. If offensive material is found on a
computer, the form is handed to the patron rather than having a long confrontation in order to get
the material off the screen as quickly as possible. Once the material is off, then the Library Staff
will discuss the situation with the patron privately. Besides providing information regarding the
Texas Penal Code 43.22.a, the form also provides the Assistant Director's phone number to call
with further questions. In addition to the form, the Library is also considering realigning the
computers so the Library Staff is behind them all the time and can monitor the screens.
The Library manned the Information Booth, and a lot of the Staff volunteered at Arbor Daze. •
The Friends of the Euless Library had their semi-annual book sale here at the Library. In the past,
the book sale used to be held at the North Hills Mall. Now, the Friends have their book sale here,
and it is just as slick as it can be as well as quite successful.
While donations to the Library are wonderful, there is a lot of effort which goes into them. In
order to process them efficiently, a Material Donation Checklist is followed for memorials and
living tributes. In addition to presenting the donor with a card, which expresses the appreciation
of the Library Board and the Library, a book plate is also put inside the book. Other materials
which are donated are analyzed to see if they fit into the collection policy. If the Library cannot
use them, then they go to the Friends of the Euless Library for the next book sale or to Project
Africa at UTA.
UNFINISHED BUSINESS:
The Library will not hear back on the L.S.T.A. Grant until July 2. • Karan is researching the new
nametags(lanyards versus magnets versus pins)so the Library is moving forward with that. • The
Air Conditioning is doing well now, and the carpet was cleaned in the meeting room. The
grounds need work, and the water fountain cooler has been requested but is on hold for now.
NEW AND MISCELLANEOUS BUSINESS:
The Library Foundation recently purchased two pieces of art by David Scherer,"One Man Band"
and"Teacher"which will be placed in the Teen Room. The Library Foundation is also
researching the feasibility of a glass project, "Blooms of Enlightenment", which would be created
by David Keens and the Glass Department at the University of Texas—Arlington and installed in
the Teen Point. The glass artwork would hang higher than the kids can reach and would also be
visible from the freeway. It is the goal of the Library Foundation to get all types of art into the
Library. While there is much to consider with a project of this magnitude, the Foundation shall
continue to research various information to report to City Council.
CITIZEN INPUT:
None.
ADJOURNMENT:
The Chairman asked for a motion to adjourn. The motion was made to adjourn by LuAnn
Portugal and seconded by Betty Fuller. The meeting was adjourned at 8:23 p.m.
Respectfully Submitted
