HomeMy WebLinkAbout2001-08-02 EULESS LIBRARY BOARD MINUTES August 2, 2001 Chairman Barney Snitz called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. MEMBERS PRESENT STAFF PRESENT Betty Fuller JoAnn Rogers Barney Snitz Karan Jasper LuAnn Portugal Alex Horton Kate Lyon Gracie Reyes Toutai Kautai SPECIAL GUEST OF THE BOARD: Mike Utzman Leon & Jan Hogg Mike Utzman is on the Economic Advisory Committee with the City of Euless, but presented to the library board as a private citizen, master plan needs for the city with his ideas for a Fine Arts Theater. His ideas are in the conceptual stage and he is in the process of presenting his ideas to different groups within the city, seeking support and input from people interested in the best for Euless and active within the city. The board held a thirty-minute discussion following this presentation and could not come up with a consensus. The board has decided to table further discussion on this plan at this time. Leon Hogg is our respected City Council member. Leon has suggested that a proposed tree or living memorial for Bruce Williams is nice idea as Sheila, with the constant support of Bruce have made many changes with the growth and expansion of the library's position in the community through technology. Leon also expressed that the council is heading into a planned very productive weeklong retreat to complete the city budget process and things are looking good for the phase two planning of the Texas Star. DISPOSITION OF THE MINUTES: The Acting-Chairman Barney Snitz asked for a motion to be made to accept the minutes as prepared. Alex Horton made the motion to accept the minutes as prepared, and Betty Fuller seconded the motion. The motion was passed. The occasion brought in more than 500 people during the week's diverse activities. Several letters of gratitude were sent to the library thanking all for their work at such a wonderfully entertaining and cultural week. A record circulation of 30,298 also occurred during this time — challenging staff to work harder than ever. Sheila Williams's husband passed away during the month and a lunch was provided by staff in support of Sheila. A $100,000 Tiff Grant was applied for with Sherry Moeller and JoAnn finishing up the work that Sheila Williams worked so diligently on. One of the many things on the wish list for the Tiff Grant is a digital camera along with many other electronic upgrades. The air conditioner has been under repairs for the past two weeks with parts finally being ordered and replaced. A new group to the Euless library has accepted an invitation to present a once a month seminar for aspiring business people. The organization is known as SCORE and it comprises of retired business executives which council new businesses and offers a private session to review and advise with a business plan. A new brochure promoting the library has been developed and will be distributed at local Junior and Senior High School resource offices. The library and staff would like to develop a new logo for the library. Staff is now wearing nametags. UNFINISHED BUSINESS: The board formally welcomed two of its three new alternates by individual introductions with Barney Snitz explaining a few of the fundamentals and expectations to the new board members. The aquarium is still being worked on, but the owner of the company that is providing the service is optimistic it will soon be up and running again. The expansion and utilization of the rest of the library building is a part of a five-year plan with a feasibility study recommended. The youth area is already in the plan to finish out in 2002. The police department has supported the youth discipline policy by using compassion and support and the teaching of children the proper behavior in public buildings. There are three basic rules at the library: no running,pushing or yelling. NEW AND MISCELLANEOUS BUSINESS: Mike McGehee has suggested a memorial for Sheila Williams's husband. The board was asked to think about what would be most appropriate. The five-year birthday celebration was outstanding. Grammy award winning band Brave Combo played a wonderful two set concert in the library enticing the audience to participate and fully enjoy the evening. CITIZEN INPUT: None. ADJOURNMENT: The Acting Chairman asked for a motion to adjourn. The motion was made by Alex Horton and seconded by Kate Lyon.
