She really enjoys the city of Euless. As Vice President of her Homeowner's Association, she has had occasion to meet and work with the City Staff prior to becoming an employee. Karan came to the City of Euless from Legend Airlines. Prior to Legend she worked for Herb Kelleher in the Executive Office at Southwest Airlines. Karan thinks if she was able to keep up with Herb Kelleher, then she will be able to keep up with JoAnn! Karan really loves living in Euless, getting to know her neighbors and the overall atmosphere. Welcome,Karan! The Library is fortunate to have you. DISPOSITION OF THE MINUTES: The Chairman asked for a motion to be made to accept the minutes as prepared. To promote the Summer Reading Programs, the Youth Staff is going to every elementary school. Baskin-Robbins in Bedford is supporting the Library with literacy in May by giving the first 50 people who bring in the newsletter and check out any materials in the Library a coupon for a free ice cream cone. Students from South Euless walked to the Library and were given a tour of the building. A Mother/Daughter Formal Afternoon Tea Party will be held on May 12`h. It will be an opportunity for little girls and their mothers to dress up. Reservations are needed. JoAnn passed out the second edition of the Public Library Advisory Board Handbook, which was developed by the Public Library Administrators of North Texas (PLANT), to all the Board Members. JoAnn is currently the President of PLANT and encouraged all of us to read the handbook. JoAnn asked us to consider the Library's policies regarding overdue books. Is it really necessary to send out two memos plus make a phone call for overdue books? Is there any way the Library can change this to save money? Starting this month, JoAnn will be bringing in books each meeting to share with us. On a whimsical note, the Library Staff is now getting "the Bird", a.k.a. the Maltese Falcon statue donated by Betty Fuller to the Library after the Murder in the Library ... Chapter Two, for doing something "silly". JoAnn recently won the Bird for, unbeknownst-to- her, breaking her ankle while volunteering at Arbor Daze. UNFINISHED BUSINESS: Alternates for the Library Board should be appointed during the first City Council Meeting in May. City Council has four candidates to choose from. The Library is planning an Open House/Birthday Party in July to celebrate the Library's fifth year in the new building. JoAnn is looking for a volunteer from the Library Board or the Library Foundation to work with her. Several Board Members said they would check their schedules and let her know their availability. The new disciplinary system is working well. The Library is working with two representatives from the Police Department, Officers Burnett and Gordon, to be sure the lines of communication are open. The Library is also working with the Fire Department regarding an emergency evacuation plan. The Library is getting a packet of information the Head Librarian can grab during an emergency. JoAnn noted the Library is working more closely with both the Police and Fire Departments regarding Safety and Health Issues. NEW AND MISCELLANEOUS BUSINESS: Kerry McGeath will be meeting with Sergeant Ron Williamson about bomb and gun safety in the Library. The Library is expanding its network by making contacts with other support agencies within the community. JoAnn will be meeting with Rick Herold next week to review the proposed budget. She will let the Members of the Library Board know when the proposed budget will be going before City Council. The Library Foundation's quarterly meeting will be held June 18th. Randy Westin will be there to present Westin Gardens plan for the Library regarding landscaping and art projects. The Foundation is continuing to work on the fund-raiser for the fall. Friends of the Euless Library held their semi-annual meeting in April and contributed$2800.00 to the Library($500.00 towards the purchase of a color printer, $1000.00 for Youth programs, and an additional $1300.00 for the Library to use at its discretion. As always,we thank the Friends of the Library for their hard work and continued support. Barney Snitz visited the Boston Public Library while he was in Boston to participate in the Boston Marathon last month. Besides sharing brochures, pictures, and interesting facts about the Library, Barney also agreed to share some of his experiences about the Marathon after the meeting. CITIZEN INPUT: None. ADJOURNMENT: The Chairman asked for a motion to adjourn. The motion was made by Barney Snitz and seconded by LuAnn Portugal.
