REPORTS FROM THE LIBRARY ADMINISTRATOR: October, 2000—see attached.
Additional comments:
CPR Training will be held on November 10th by Jeff Morris from 8:00 to 2:00 for the Library
Staff. The Library Board is welcome to attend. Please let Margaret Peters know if you can
come. • The Friends of the Euless Library's book sale in September was very successful. The
Friends donated $1500.00 to the Library of which $600.00 was spent on a karaoke machine for
the Teen Sleepover in October. • The Teen Sleepover was most successful. Four Library Staff
members participated along with several other adult volunteers and 57 teens. They stayed up all
night and had a ball. Elizabeth does a fine job with these activities. • The City of Euless was
well represented for Casino Night. There was a very good turn out. People left having had a
good time. The venue was perfect, the food was wonderful (as usual at the Texas Star).
Attendees wanted to know if the Library Foundation was going to do this again. Library
Foundation and Library Board members received positive feedback about the library, the
library's art, and the event. • The Food for Fines event will be held for one week only from
November 27th through December 2°d. For each non-perishable food item or toiletry item, $1.00
will be removed from fines. This is for fines only. Damaged or lost books must still be
replaced. • New budget tracking forms were designed to track processing supplies, purchasing
supplies, and circulating supplies. Currently, the cost for these items are not shown separately
on the budget and are lumped together under "Supplies". This doesn't show the complete story
as it looks as though it all goes to Office Supplies. • The Book Festival in Austin is coming up.
Laura Bush is sponsoring the event for the fourth year. There will be a variety of wonderful
authors there. The money earned by the event goes directly back to Public Libraries. Grants of
$2500.00 (maximum)may be applied for. The Euless Library received this grant, and the money
will be going for the purchase of Spanish books. The Library wants to have a presentation and a
special event when the books come in.
UNFINISHED BUSINESS:
It was noted and appreciated that the non-partisan's voter display informs voters where they need
to go to vote for early voting. It was also noted appreciated that the party platforms were
included in the display(as recommended in last month's meeting). • Other comments: The
business magazines being shelved in one area is a great idea as it is one-stop-shopping. Also
great is the express monitor for the Internet. Unlike the other Internet computers, which have an
hour limit, the express monitor has a 15 minute limit. • JoAnn was asked if there were any
plans to pursue the expansion of the library in this budget year. The answer is "no". • The
sculptures on loan to the Library are super. It was suggested they be moved around to different
locations/different departments so patrons will have a better chance to see all of them.
Once all of the PC's purchased with TIF money have been installed, the Euless Library will have
more PC's than any other Library in the area(except for Irving and Fort Worth). All but one
piece of software has come in, and it will be here soon. Once it arrives, the Library will start
loading them to get them ready for installation. The Euless Library is very lucky in that the
Euless I.S. Department works very well with us, and that Danny takes very good care of the
Library.
Concern was raised regarding the trash in the walkway out back. Part of the problem is the west
wind. JoAnn will do further checking on the letter she wrote previously about this issue. She
will also inquire about the steam cleaner(with which to remove the gum from sidewalks) and see
what can be done about the fire ants on the west side of the building.
NEW AND MISCELLANEOUS BUSINESS:
Kerry McGeath described a new branch of the Indianapolis Library he visited while on vacation
in Indiana. The new library branch is located in a revitalized mall and offers an actual coffee bar
complete with pastries, new books on cherry wood shelves, chairs around a fireplace in the
middle, a children's department with walls strategically built to keep the noise from the rest of
the area, and many other very nice amenities and services. It was noted that Indiana is rated
number 2 in the nation(compared to Texas at number 46).
Today is Kate Lyons last day at the Library as she is going to Farmers Branch to be their
Assistant Director. We want to thank her for everything—especially for the fine job she did with
the Literary Lone Stars. Thanks also to Tom Cox for being a very big supporter of the Library.
Wes Scott and Russell Schoonover will not be coming back to the Library Board. Very special
thanks and appreciation go to them for all of their hard work, ideas, and contributions.
The City of Euless Appreciation Dinner is November 13t. Everyone must RSVP by tomorrow.
The Library Board's next meeting will be held in January. The Board will also do a workshop
on advocacy in January.
CITIZEN INPUT:
None.
ADJOURNMENT:
The Acting Chairman asked for a motion to adjourn. The motion was made by Alex Horton and
seconded by LuAnn Portugal. The meeting was adjourned at 8:37 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Kathy Grove
