Our Chairman asked for a motion to be made to accept the minutes. Alex Horton made the
motion to accept the minutes, and Betty Fuller seconded the motion. The motion was passed
REPORTS FROM THE LIBRARY ADMINISTRATOR: August, 2000—see attachments.
Additional comments:
The Library is now having a Super Staff celebration every Friday. On the 27th, the staff will be
having a spaghetti dinner. The Library is getting new polo shirts to wear to work for the Staff
(and Library Board)to purchase. Anyone interested needs to let JoAnn know.
The Literary Lone Stars Texas Author Event will be Monday, September 18th at 7:00. There
will be a reception starting at 5:30 for the Texas Authors, the City Council, the Library Board,
the D/FW :Literary Guild, and the Library Staff. All Board Members are encouraged to attend.
It was suggested the Library utilize the water bill to advertise a future bill. Since this is a unique
opportunity, the Library will find a good use for this. It was also suggested the newsletter
reference the city's web page. Fun library facts from the American Library Association: there
are more public libraries than there are McDonalds (over 15,000), and more children participate
in summer reading programs than play baseball.
JoAnn went over the proposed budget for the Library and explained that most funding comes
from the City General Funds. A high pressure water cleaner is needed to clean the walks out
front around the sculpture garden. JoAnn also gave us an update regarding the lost book policy:
The patron may now pick a book from the Library's best seller list, pay a $5.00 fee, and provide
a hardback copy of the chosen book to the Library. It may be a new copy or a gently used one.
The Friends of the Euless Library will be having their fall book sale the weekend of September
22nd. The Library has many activities planned in conjunction with the sale on Saturday and
Sunday. In addition to the entertainment, the Mid-Cities Genealogical Society will have a bake
sale on Saturday.
There are 5 sculptures on loan throughout the Library. The Board was encouraged to walk
around the Library to see them.
UNFINISHED BUSINESS:
More book titles were added to the non-partisan voting display. Two compressors were replaced
in the air conditioning units before they went out of warranty. The "Connect Tarrant"project did
not get the $500,000.00 grant from the state. The Northeast Tarrant County committee is
regrouping so the Library is waiting to see what is recommended. It is possible information
kiosks will be placed around the City of Euless with funding from our own grant money. Sheila
does our grant money requests, and Sherry helps, too. The Library's 30 PC's have been received
and are in the back. These were purchased with a TIF grant.
JoAnn will pursue getting CPR training for the Staff as part of the Library's emergency
preparedness. It was decided a picture board of the Staff is not going to be done due to personal
preferences and the frequent changes in personnel. It was noted that the Library keeps the City
Council Agenda at the Reference Desk. It comes out 72 hours before the meeting and is also
posted outside of Building A.
NEW AND MISCELLANEOUS BUSINESS:
The Library Foundation looked at a relief for the north side exterior of the Library. More
appropriate Texas tolerant plants are being considered for the landscaping of the Library. A
Landscape Architect with Westin Gardens will come out and discuss landscaping ideas. The
goal is to develop a 5 year plan in which to identify additional pieces of art and have the ability
to apply for grants.
In the meantime, the Library Foundation has purchased the bronze statue of the little boy out in
the lobby (Time Out Boy) and are in the process of purchasing the little girl (Bookworm II). For
now, they will stay in the lobby.
The Library Foundation's Casino Night is Saturday, October 28th at 6:30 at the Texas Star.
Tickets are $40.00 a couple in advance. This is not a formal event as the Library Foundation
wants to draw a larger part of the community. Tickets will be available at the next meeting.
There is a General Meeting on Monday, September 11 at 7:00 at the Dr. Pepper Star Center. An
election of officers will be held after which a guided tour of the new facility will be offered.
Alex Horton attended an Advocacy Workshop and passed out several handouts suggesting ways
in which we may be better advocates for our Library. Because this is such an important issue,
and because so much information was provided, it was decided an advocacy workshop for the
Library Board would be held in January(to better prepare us for Legislative Day).
Several members of the Library Board have terms which will expire at the end of this year.
Everyone was encouraged to send their applications in to Susan Crim by Friday, September
22nd.
CITIZEN INPUT:
None.
ADJOURNMENT:
The Chairman asked for a motion to adjourn. The motion was made by Alex Horton and
seconded by Kerry McGeath. The meeting was adjourned at 8:09 p.m.
Respectfully submit d,
