SPECIAL GUEST OF THE BOARD:
Kate Cognale is a part-time Reference Librarian who works nights and weekends. She is a mother
of four and lives in Euless. She comes to the Euless Library with a wealth of experience and
knowledge and is a welcome addition to the Staff.
DISPOSITION OF THE MINUTES:
Mike McGehee asked for a motion to be made to accept the minutes. Barney Snitz made the
motion to accept the minutes, and Wes Scott seconded the motion. The motion was passed.
REPORTS FROM THE LIBRARY ADMINIS"t'RATOR: November and December, 1999 — see
attached.
Additional comments:
A new Library Organization Chart was provided. Kate Lyon and Sherry Moeller were promoted
so now the Library has a Management Team of four plus the Library Secretary. This new
arrangement is working well. To accommodate these changes, offices have been moved around
creating a need for more study rooms. To meet this need, the meeting room will be used as a
study room. JoAnn is also rewriting the job descriptions of all employees, including volunteers,
and analyzing them.
The Library started using a new delivery service, Tex Express, on January 3. This service will
provide requested inner library loans from participating Texas libraries within two days. While
there is an annual fee, this service will not charge postage on these loans (unlike standard inner
library loans). The service will be expanding to include public and university libraries in
Oklahoma Arkansas, and New Mexico.
The Library is having good response to its cultural programs. In addition to the monthly Night
Notes programs, the Library is now participating in the Masterworks Series. The Magic Flute will
be presented on February 7.
The Library is reassessing its procedures for Internet use with the intent of making it less
cumbersome and more available to the public. This will not only benefit the patrons but also the
Librarians.
Target donated a fully decorated 12 foot Christmas tree, a Winnie the Pooh snow globe, and a
Santa for which the Library is grateful.
UNFINISHED BUSINESS:
The Library ceiling was repaired in December which included being painted and the fixtures being
replaced. While the ceiling is much better, the lighting is generating numerous complaints from
the Library patrons. The lights were replaced with mercury vapor lights which do not appear to be
suitable for the Library and indoor lighting. The Library Board supports JoAnn and the Library
Staff and recommends the lighting be studied further to be sure the lighting is appropriate for the
Library.
JoAnn confirmed that the fish tank does not have sand in the bottom because it is a maintenance
issue for the filtering system. Since the bottom of the tank looks empty, she will request more
rocks be put by the front of the aquarium.
Since the self check-out machine does not print the title of the books being checked out, it was
suggested pencils be placed by the machine so patrons may write the titles of the books on their
receipts.
It was questioned as to what the policy is regarding overdue library books when there is a waiting
list for them. To handle this situation, the Staff is watching the reserve list. If there are three
requests for an overdue book, then the Library Staff will go out and get a new copy to circulate.
JoAnn updated the Library Board on several issues: the pictures of the Board Members taken in
November will be made into a poster;the drive-up window will be completed after winter;the
Friend's Scholastic Book Sale in November earned$400.00 in books plus$500.00 dollars; and
the Customer Service issues addressed in June's Work Session are continuing to be resolved.
NEW AND MISCELLANEOUS BUSINESS:
The Friends of the Euless Library will be hosting a potluck dinner in February and a book sale in
March. The Library will have other entertainment to coincide with the book sale as it did in
September.
The Election of Officers was held. Mike McGehee was nominated to serve as Chairman by
Barney Snitz and was seconded by Kathy Grove. Barney Snitz was nominated to serve as Vice
Chairman by Kerry McGeath and was seconded by Alex Horton. Kathy Grove was nominated to
serve as Secretary by Alex Horton and was seconded by LuAnn Portugal. All were unanimously
elected by the Library Board.
The selection of the Director to the Library Foundation was also completed. LuAnn Portugal was
nominated by Barney Snitz and was seconded by Alex Horton. The Library Board unanimously
elected LuAnn. Her first meeting with the Library Foundation will be January 10.
CITIZEN INPUT:
None.
ADJOURNMENT:
The Chairman asked for a motion to adjourn. The motion was made by Barney Snitz and
seconded by Wes Scott. The meeting was adjourned at 8:53 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
-Kath Y ove
Euless ibrary Board Secretary
