This summer, in response to none of the neighborhood school libraries being open, the Euless Library is encouraging the area children to get library cards and to join the Summer Reading Club. The Summer Reading Club runs from June 1 to August 1,and it kicks off June 7 with Night of a Thousand Stars. The library will also be offering Terrific Tuesdays in June and July and will continue to offer Games and Gab and Super Saturdays throughout the Summer. To encourage participation, the school marquees may have a message reminding the students to Come Visit the Library. The library will also be registering children for library cards at the Kindergarten Roundup and the Junior High Registration. Meredith emphasized what great community support the Euless Library has from the City as well as from the police, the firemen, and the Rec Center. She suggested future city events need to be coordinated with library events such as combining breakfast with Rudolph at the Rec Center with the library's Super Saturday. The Euless Library has a good reputation state wide for its work with the schools as does Meredith who even spoke at the TLA about this topic. The Board was asked to read the information prior to the June meeting when these topics will be discussed. All children's media videos have been moved to the children's section of the library. NEW AND MISCELLANEOUS BUSINESS: The question was raised as to how many meetings a Board Member may miss before he needs to resign. Per the City Handbook,if a member misses three meetings without good cause, then he needs to resign. This issue will be pursued further in the June meeting. JoAnn Rogers suggested a Saturday workshop with the Board. The purpose would be to evaluate where we are in meeting the needs of the community and to redefine where we are in terms of movement and plans. The consensus of the Board was to pursue having such a meeting. The date will be announced no later than the June meeting, and the time is tentatively set for 9:00 until 2:00. Charles McGehee and Bernard Snitz volunteered to work with JoAnn on the agenda. JoAnn is to provide copies of reference materials from a Bookstores versus Libraries seminar Sheila Williams recently attended. It was questioned if the Night Notes program is distracting to the library patrons, and it is not. If anything, this program draws more people in to the library. It was pointed out that it was distracting to have the library staff shelve books during the program. JoAnn decided staff would be directed away from the area for future performances. JoAnn was asked if the library took donations of large houseplants, and they do. A ficus tree was offered to be donated. Complaints have been made regarding the self-check machine printing a book number instead of the book title on the receipt. To get the machine upgraded to do this would cost a lot of money. Complaints have also been made about the machine requiring a plastic template be put on the front of the book. It was suggested the library consider doing something similar to what the Police Association Alumni is doing to raise money. Instead of selling bricks, it was suggested the library have a brass tree and sell leaves with the supporters' names on them in order to raise additional funds. To make the copier easier to use, it was suggested a template be posted along the edges showing the orientation of the how the paper needs to be placed. A dollar bill changer was obtained to eliminate patrons from having to wait in line at the circulation desk for change. CITIZEN INPUT: None. ADJOURNMENT: The Chairman asked for a motion to adjourn. The motion was made by Betty Fuller and seconded by Kerry McGeath. The meeting was adjourned at 8:44 p.m. Respectfully submitted thy ,'ove Euless ' ibrary Board Secretary
