HomeMy WebLinkAbout1998-08-13 EULESS LIBRARY BOARD 444)4441t) MINUTES August 13, 1998 Chairperson Charles McGehee called the Euless Library Board meeting to order at 7:03 p.m. MEMBERS PRESENT STAFF PRESENT VISITORS Charles McGehee Betty Yarbrough Maxine Wallis Sheila Williams Bernard Snitz Elizabeth Schoonover Kerry McGeath (Alexander McGeath--guest) DISPOSITION OF MINUTES OF PREVIOUS MEETING: There were five corrections: Page 1 , line 16, Miss H-E-B: page 2, line 1 , "Pets" and "included 5 attendees." Page 2, line 6, "Directors" and page 3, line 8, at the end of the line, "and" . A motion was made to accept the minutes as corrected by Liz Schoonover, and seconded by Maxine Wallis. Motion was carried. REPORT OF LIBRARY DIRECTOR - June and July, 1998 Betty Yarbrough reported June and July circulation information. New registrations: June--457; 77 out of the city and 7 out of the county. July--606; 115 out of the city and 15 out of the county. Active library cards: June--21 , 024 July--21 , 675. Total holdings: June--75, 119 July--73,432 . Reference questions answered: June--1 , 617 July--1 ,759. Video cassettes circulated: June--4 , 210 July--4, 608. There were 61 requests for Interlibrary loans in June with 50 items received. In July there were 37 requests and 33 items received. Genealogy sign-ins: June--55 of which 31 were Euless residents. In July--61 of which 34 were Euless residents. Walk-in traffic was 10, 822 in June and 10,419 in July. In house use of materials in June was 5, 989 and 6,943 in July. VOLUNTEERS: Volunteers for June were 3 adults contributing 27 hours and 53 youth giving 318.55 hours. A total of 345.55 hours contributed by 56 people. In July 14 adults contributed 85 hours and 42 youth gave 211 .25 hours--a total of 296.25 hours by 56 Volunteers. CHILDREN'S PROGRAMS: Storytime Sessions were 25 with 569 children and 140 adults attending in June. In July, we had 20 sessions with 379 children and 128 adults attending. OUTREACH PROGRAMS: June: 8 with 97 children and 25 adults participating. July: 6 with 233 children and 81 adults involved. In July: Midway Recreation Preschool--4 programs Headstart Elementary Schools Library Card sign up day: 26 people signed up 245 new card holders. OTHER PROGRAMS AND TOURS: June: 12 programs with 233 children and 68 adults. Summer reading program: registered 592 (to date 986) July: 11 programs with 671 children, 193 adults and 25 volunteers. Summer reading program: 71 new registrations, total now 1054. ADULT PROGRAMS: June: One program on Debt Management--6 attended July: One Genealogy Workshop--12 attendees LIBRARY MANAGERS ACTIVITIES: June: Attended 3 meetings of the Library Foundation. Volunteer Fair, by Elizabeth Draper at Trinity High. Texas Municiple League, District 8 Gave TOUR for Grapevine Library Board and Council members . NTRLS Board of Directors meeting. Interviewing for Secretary. July: Lets Talk about Books TLA Annual Assembly (by Meredith and Elizabeth) Library Foundation meeting Interviewing for Secretary OTHER REPORTS: June: Sheila: TALL Texan Training Various staff attended Sexual Harassment Seminar. July: Fire Safety training for Staff. Sexual Harassment--continued training for staff. Sheila Williams--"Women in Government" Sheila and Sandra--Grant writing/Humanities Games and Gab for school year (Sat. 10-11 ) Computer use: 187 people, 207.25 hours Computer Internet: 178 people, 169 .25 hours Phone Renewals: 181 UNFINISHED BUSINESS: We discussed the GOALS and OBJECTIVES of our Library. A correc- tion was made on page 3, line 9 to read, "Evaluate 20% of the collection each year removing materials which are outdated. . . ." Page 4, line 10 changing contracts to contacts. Maxine Wallis moved that we accept the Goals and Objectives of 1998 to 2003 as revised and adopted by the board and forward a copy to Mr. Tom Cox (Director of Administrative Services) . The motion was seconded by Kerry McGeath and carried unanimously. NEW AND MISCELLANEOUS BUSINESS: We discussed the "Materials Selection Policy" at great length. A motion was made by Kerry McGeath that we adopt the MATERIALS SELECTION AND ACCESSIBILITY POLICY as the official policy of the Euless Library. Bernard Snitz seconded the motion and it was unanimously carried. Betty Yarbrough informed us of the CITY OF EULESS OPEN HOUSE on September 12th. Eighteen city offices and locations will be open to the public so we can get a peek at how our city operates. There will be a Book Sale at the Library on Sept. 12th and 13th (Sat. 9:00 - 5: 00 and Sun. 1 :00 - 5:00) . The Texas Library Association, District 7, will be meeting Saturday, Oct. 3rd at Heritage High School in Colleyville. One of the topics will be Library Legislation. NTRLS (North Texas Regional Library System) meeting will be held in Wichita Falls on Sept. 24th. Bernard Snitz suggested that we have one librarian come into our meeting each month for a few minutes to become acquainted with each one. Everyone thought favorably of his idea. Charles McGehee informed us that the next piece of public Art provided by the Library Foundation has been designed and is in the process of being made. It will be a delightful addition to our library grounds. He also announced that the Library Foundation' s GALA will be held on Oct. 24th. Betty Yarbrough informed us she is retiring January, 1999 after 20 years of service to our Euless Library. She has brought us a long way, and directed many improvements in our facility. Sue Morrow is also retiring in January after 20 years of faithful service. We shall miss you Sue.
