HomeMy WebLinkAbout1998-04-02 EULESS LIBRARY BOARD MINUTES April 2, 1998 Chairperson Mike McGehee called the Euless Library Board meeting to order, at 7:00 p.m. MEMBERS PRESENT STAFF PRESENT VISITORS Mike McGehee Sheila Williams Elizabeth (Liz) Schoonover Betty Fuller Kerry McGeath Maxine Wallis Bernard Snitz (Alternate) DISPOSITION OF MINUTES OF PREVIOUS MEETING: One correction was made. At the top of the page it had February instead of March. Correction made and Bernard Snitz motioned that the minutes be accepted and was seconded by Betty Fuller. REPORT OF LIBRARY DIRECTOR-March 1998 In Betty Yarbrough's absence, Sheila Williams reported March 1998 circulation information. New registrations: 463; 123 out of the city and 2 out of the county. Active Library Cards: 19,793. Total Holdings: 73,372. Reference questions answered: 2,576. Videocassettes circulated: 3,595. There were 33 requests for Interlibrary loans; 41 items were received. Phone renewals: February - 134, March- 153. Genealogy sign-ins: Total 64 of which 36 were Euless residents. Walk-in traffic was 12,457 and in-house use of materials 6,409. Total Volunteers for March were 21 with total hours contributed 110.75. Programs: Storytime Sessions were 28 with 384 children and 97 adults attending. Special Programs & Tours, Month of March: Specials: Parenting Center - 11. Super Saturday III -Wildflower Art - 22 children; 13 adults. Ballet Academy of Texas - 18 children; 45 adults. Tours: 4 Tours: Cub Scouts: 9 children; 3 adults. Trinity & L. D. Bell High School Family/Consumer Science classes: 17 children; 3 adults. Home School Study - 15 children; 5 adults. Tiger Cubs: 7 children; 8 adults. Outreach - Midway Recreation Preschool (5) programs: 68 children; 14 adults. Headstart: 27 children; 4 adults. Reading Circle (3) programs: 14 volunteers with total of 21 hours. Adult Program: Genealogy Intermediate Workshop -Attendance 27 + 3 instructors. Mrs. Yarbrough attended the following meetings in March 1998: 1. Northeast Mall Book Sale. 2. Retirement Reception Fort Worth Public Library Director. 3. Let's Talk About Books. 4. Library Foundation Meeting (2 meetings). 5. Met with Mid-Cities Genealogical Society Officers to discuss cooperative projects. 6. Arbor Daze Meeting with Meredith McMannis. 7. NTRLS Spring Assembly -Mineral Wells with Sheila Williams. 8. City Council when Sue Morrow received 30 year pin and pen. 9. Budget Kick-off meeting with Sheila and Sandra McCurdy. 10. Parent Network Summer Activity Fair with Meredith. Registered 7 new library cards, 125 flyers distributed. OTHER REPORTS: 1. All staff have or will attend Sexual Harrassment Training Classes. 2. Sue Morrow received 30 year pin.. 3. Four staff members attended State Library Workshop -Euless hosted. 4. City Employee Burger Bash. 5. H-E-B Summer Activity Fair -Meredith and Betty did library card registration and gave out summer library program information. 6. Ref Net Meeting (Dallas) Sandra and Scott Thomson attended. 7. Sandra-NTRLS/Advisory &Planning meeting- Olney, Texas. 8. PC Workshop - Sherry Moeller. 9. Kidshare -Lewisville -Meredith. 10. Employee of the Month meeting -Sheila. 11. Internet Teleconference - Irving- Sandra, Carolyn Hoots and Angela Rosenbaum. 12. Ballet Academy of Texas -Meredith. 13. Income Tax Program-Scott. UNFINISHED BUSINESS Mike McGehee welcomed Maxine Wallis to the Library Board, stepping up to place 6 on the Library Board from Alternate #1. Sheila Williams presented us with a letter of"Thanks" from Trinity High School students. In March, several students toured the Library assessing Library careers which require an advanced degree. They enjoyed this "on hands" learning experience in our facility. NEW AND MISCELLANEOUS BUSINESS: The Library Foundation is moving ahead. The date has been set for the Gala in October to raise money for public art. They already have proposals for additional art on the Library grounds. The Friends of the Library will hold a meeting on April 17th to plan the September Book Sale. We discussed our "Euless Public Library Mission Statement and Roles". We made NO changes in the Mission Statement of our Library. One Primary Role was added: "Community Based Programs: The Library provides innovative and diverse programs for the community." One Secondary Role was added: Electronic Library: the library provides a source to access electronic media, evolving with the times. This will be discussed further at our next meeting.
