HomeMy WebLinkAbout1997-08-07 EULESS LIBRARY BOARD MINUTES August 7, 1997 Chairperson Wesley Scott called the Euless Library Board meeting to order, at 7:00 p.m. MEMBERS PRESENT STAFF PRESENT VISITORS Wesley Scott Betty Yarbrough None Maxine Wallis Sheila Williams Betty Fuller Liz Schoonover DISPOSITION OF MINUTES OF PREVIOUS MEETING: There were two corrections; the correct spelling of Willie Mae McCormick's name on page 2 and page 3, paragraph 4, and the proper "law" is the "Copy Right Law", not the Texas Law. The minutes were then accepted as revised, moved by Wesley Scott and seconded by Maxine Wallis. REPORT OF LIBRARY DIRECTOR-June 1997 Betty Yarbrough reported June 1997 circulation infoiination. New registrations: 617; 162 out of the city and 2 out of the county. Active Library Cards: 15,110. Total Holdings: 65,553. Reference questions answered: 1,241. Videocassettes circulated: 3,966. There were 57 requests for Interlibrary loans; 59 items were received. Genealogy sign-ins: Total 58 of which 34 were Euless residents. Walk-in traffic was 18,639 and in-house use of materials 6,560. Total Volunteers for June were 26 with total hours contributed 218. Programs: Storytime Sessions were 27 with 515 children and 69 adults attending. Special Programs & Tours, Month of June: Five Programs -Puppet Show, Storytelling Under the Stars, Volunteer Orientation, Critterman, Imagisphere -Spider Program. One tour- 1st Class Academy. Mrs. Yarbrough attended the following meetings in June 1997: 1. Let's Talk about Books (children's author). 2. Visited Schaefer Art Bronze foundry with Mayor, City Mgr., and Tom Cox. 3. Attended dedication of Vietnamese collection at Arlington Public Library. 4. Foundation committees (3). (2) 5. Deborah Karpuk, consultant, met with library staff. OTHER REPORTS: 1. Sheila Williams attended NTRLS Technology Committee. 2. Sheila attended Consortia meeting. 3. Sheila-Employee of the Month Committee. 4. Sheila attended East Regional meeting at The Colony. 5. Meredith McMannis -District 7 meeting. 6. Dr. Herman Totten, UNT, met with librarians interested in library school. REPORT OF LIBRARY DIRECTOR-July 1997 Betty Yarbrough reported July 1997 circulation information. New registrations: 932; 182 out of the city and 0 out of the county. Active Library Cards: 15,974. Total Holdings: 66,769. Reference questions answered: 656. Videocassettes circulated: 4,327. There were 31 requests for Interlibrary loans; 38 items were received. Genealogy sign-ins: Total 55 of which 30 were Euless residents. Walk-in traffic was 18,447 and in-house use of materials 7,004. Total Volunteers for July were 60 with total hours contributed 388. Many volunteers helped with the Summer Reading Program and Library Card Registration. Programs: Storytime Sessions were 30 with 530 children and 138 adults attending. Special Programs &Tours, Month of July: Three Programs -Pets are People Too, Rowlph T. Dog's Birthday and American Indian Center Presentation. Two tours -Day Cares. Mrs. Yarbrough attended the following meetings in July 1997: 1. Toured Schaefer Foundry again. 2. Foundation Board Meeting. 3. Texas Group Orientation with Sheila in Austin. Two people will be trained in Dallas, in October. 4. TLA Annual Assembly with Meredith McMannis and Elizabeth Draper in Austin. OTHER REPORTS: 1. New staff(replacing). 2. Meredith-Workshop in Denton (TWU). 3. Library Card Registration of Elementary Schools. 361 signed up at 6 schools. 4. District 7 - September 27, UTA. (3) 5. Friends Book Sale October 4 & 5 in the Library Lobby (Sat. & Sun.) 6. Friends meeting Thursday, October 16, at 7 p.m. UNFINISHED BUSINESS Betty Yarbrough is writing a Policy Manual pertaining to the philosophy and procedures of the library, based on our goals and our mission statement. Betty hopes to have this completed by October. NEW AND MISCELLANEOUS BUSINESS: Our CD ROM data bases are now stabilized and can be easily accessed. In September, we will have Buttons and Thimbles in our display cases near the Reference center of the library. This should be of interest to our sewing buffs. CITIZEN INPUT: Some excellent comments have come into our "Suggestion Boxes". Several people have suggested books they would like to see on our shelves. We have had compliments on the rearrangement of our CD's; they are now listed by category instead of alphabetically. The three suggestion boxes are located near the front desk, in the Youth Service area and in the Reference area.
