HomeMy WebLinkAbout1982-10-07 Regular Meeting Euless Public Library Board of Trustees October 7, 1982 CALL TO ORDER The regular meeting of the Euless Public Library Board of Trustees was called to order by Chairman Sonja Adams at 7:05 p.m. in the Fuller Room of the Library. Members Present Staff Present Sue Eichelberger Betty Yarbrough, Librarian Dave Haigler Rod Ashford Visitor Bill Foreman Ginger Smith Willie Mae McCormick, Brenda Ashford Mayor Pro-Tem APPROVAL OF MINUTES The minutes of the meeting dated September 2, 1982 were approved as written with the following correction: Page 2, Miscellaneous, the end of the second sentence should read,". . . will be used to pay the balance owed on the art bin ordered for storage of art prints and to pay for other items for the library." LIBRARIAN'S REPORT Total circulation for September was 6,654 compared to 6,167 the previous year. Total circulation for the fiscal year ended September 30, 1982 was 96,425 items a 15% increase over the previous year. There were 281 registrations, with 61 out of the city and 6 out of the county. There were 301 in-house reference questions and 498 telephone reference questions. Eighty-nine reserves were checked out. There were 61 visits to the Genealogy Room in September, with 14 (23%) being from Euless. In September 271 videocassettes were checked out. CHILDREN'S SERVICES Fourteen storytime sessions were held with 249 children and 32 adults attending. Four tours were conducted: Three for Euless Jr. High reading classes and 1 for the Euless Nursing Home. Fifty-six children and 8 adults attended. Euless Public Library Board of Trustees - Regular Meeting October 7, 1982 - Page Two VOLUNTEERS One volunteer contributed 8 hours in September. MEETINGS Chariman Sonja Adams and Betty Yarbrough attended the North Texas Library System Advisory Council meeting. The Librarian also attended the North Texas Library System Automation Committee meeting, a program at Hurst Public Library on volunteers, the unveiling of a library sculpture at Hurst Public Library and the District 7 Executive Committee Meeting. MISCELLANEOUS The Librarian reported that Euless Public Library had been accredited as a fully qualified member of the Texas State Library System for the State Fiscal year 1983. She also announced the Texas Library Association District 7 Meeting on October 16 in Stephenville and the October 19 meeting of the Friends of the Library. Fifty people are currently enrolled in the Adult Basic Education Program at the Library. The Children's Librarian met with the new Children's Librarian in Bedford to plan some joint activities . Chairman Sonja Adams has been appointed Lay Representative liaison to the North Texas Library Association. COMMITTEE REPORTS Bill Foreman shared some statistics on nation-wide population shifts and the need for libraries to serve age groups as well as cultures. He also discussed the problem of inadequate lighting in the reference area of the library. UNFINISHED BUSINESS The Librarian discussed with the Board enabling legislation that will be introduced in the next legislative session to change the way State funds are currently being dispersed to libraries. NEW BUSINESS The Board has received letters of resignation from Doug Adamson and Lori Copher. The Board regretfully accepts these resignations and wishes to extend its appreciation for the time and services these members have given to the Library Board. Euless Public Library Board of Trustees - Regular Meeting October 7, 1982 - Page Three The Chairman circulated minutes received from the City of Hurst Library Board. The motion was made and seconded that the Board send a letter to the Texas Municipal League indicating the Board's support of $1.50 per capita state funding for public libraries. The Board members also decided to send personal letters to the individual legislators urging support of such legisla- tion. The Librarian provided each board member a copy of the Texas Public Library Trustee Manual prepared by the Texas State Library. Chairman Sonja Adams presented to the board the proposed Texas Library Association Standards and Guidelines for Texas Public Libraries for 1983. After the District 7 Meeting in October the Librarian will advise the board as to how the Euless Public Library compares with the guidelines as finaliz- ed at that meeting . Bill Foreman indicated a need to draw up a definite plan for future expansion of library physical facilities. The Chairman requested that Mr. Fore- man and the Librarian work on this.
