HomeMy WebLinkAbout2011-11-07 Regular Meeting Parks and Leisure Services Board November 7, 2011 CALL TO ORDER The regular meeting of the Parks and Leisure Services Board was called to order at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, November 7, 2011, in the Council Chambers of the Euless City Hall building by Chairman Eric Owens. Other Board Members present: Carroll Scott, Alex Horton, John Raab and alternates Travis Riffle and Tiffany Smith. Members absent: Darrel Knobloch. Board Member Randy Jones arrived at 7:06 p.m. Staff members present: Director of Parks and Community Services Ray McDonald, Parks Superintendent Terry Boaz, Parks Manager Randy Smith, Recreation Superintendent Michael Davenport, Athletic Supervisor John Douthit and Administrative Secretary Linda Lux. Visitors present: Garry Pearson (BESA), Steve and Loretta Doty and Mrs. Kassam. INVOCATION Chairman Owens gave the invocation. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Chairman Owens asked if there were any additions or corrections to the minutes from the October 3, 2011 regular meeting. Carroll Scott made the motion to approve the minutes as presented and was seconded by John Raab. The vote was unanimous. I. Board Member's Reports Carroll Scott—Reflection Park, Villages of Bear Creek Park—reported no items of concern Alex Horton - Midway Park, Blessing Branch Park—reported no items of concern John Raab—South Euless Park, Heritage Park—reported no items of concern Parks and Leisure Services Board Page 2 November 7, 2011 Travis Riffle -West Park, Wilshire Park—reported no items of concern Randy Jones- Bob Eden Park, Trailwood Park—retaining wall at Trailwood Park looks great Tiffany Smith — McCormick Park, Preserve at McCormick Park — suggested that maybe more lighting be installed along the trail by McCormick Park Chairman Owens- Parks at Texas Star Athletic Complex—reported no items of concern Chairman Owens commented on the following recent special event held: • October 1st—Stars over Euless—Bob Eden Park—was well attended Chairman Owens mentioned the next upcoming special events in December are: • Saturday, December 3rd—Christmas Parade of Lights—6:30 p.m. • Saturday, December 10th— Heritage Park Christmas— 1:00 p.m.—5:00 p.m. Chairman Owens thanked everyone for their reports tonight. II. Volunteer of the Month Chairman Owens presented Mrs. Kassam with the November 2011 Volunteer of the Month plaque. He mentioned that Mrs. Kassam has been involved with enlisting her two sons in our special events as volunteers since December 2007. They were all involved with Heritage Park Christmas, Easter Egg Stuffing and the Easter Egg Hunts, Arbor Daze, Summer Concerts, Movies in the Park, Stars over Euless, Halloween events and many other events during the last couple of years. She also recruited the services of those in her Shia Imami Ismail Community in 2009. She recruited volunteers for the 2009 Easter Egg Scramble, 2010 Back to School event, Christmas Parade, 2011 Texas Junior Angler event and our Easter Stuffing events. She has always worked closely with Jerry Poteet and since became the liaison between her community and our events. Chairman Owens said Mrs. Kassam is not present but her plaque will be delivered to her. Mrs. Kassam arrived at the end of the meeting and was given her award by Chairman Owens. Business of the Tree Board Tree Board Chairman Carroll Scott reported on the following for October 1st—31st: • Total man hours-494.00 o 308.00 Horticulture o 108.00 Forestry o 74.00 Greenhouse o 0 Special Projects o 4.00 Training • There were no trees planted and no tree related purchases IV. Athletic Association a. BESA (Bedford-Euless Soccer Association)—Garry Pearson BESA President Garry Pearson distributed a handout to all the Board Members. He said BESA again would like to convey their thanks and appreciation to the Parks Department staff for their efforts and success in continuing to provide our soccer players with some of the best fields in the Metroplex at the Parks at Texas Star. Currently they have 912 registered players for the Fall 2011 season with 58% of the players (525) being from Euless. The spring season 2012 is scheduled to begin February 25th and will end in mid-May. b. PATS (Parks at Texas Star) Baseball Update—John Douthit PATS Athletic Supervisor John Douthit showed a graph representing the number of teams since PACS began coordinating the baseball leagues and how participation has increased each year. V. Parks and Community Services Reports a. Community Services Report—Ray McDonald Director of Parks and Community Services Ray McDonald reported on the following: • Parade of Lights—Saturday, December 3rd Chairman Owens thanked everyone for their reports. VI. Other New Business Chairman Owens reminded the Board Members that the December meeting will be held at the Parks Department facility. VII. Input from City Council Members and Visitors There was no input from the audience. Parks and Leisure Services Board Page 5 November 7, 2011 ADJOURNMENT Chairman Owens gave the benediction.
