Librarian; Mrs. Betty Yarbrough, Children's Librarian; and Mrs. Barbara Zieschang;
Honorary Board Member.
Those not in attendence were Sis Perkins, Betty
Pottloff, and Dorothy O'Daniel .
Approval of Minutes
On page 3, it should read the board will present
their recommendation, not decision, at the next meeting. Also, the people who made the
complaints will be invited to the October meeting, not the September meeting.
Mrs. Armstrong wanted it clarified that Mrs.
Yarbrough did attempt to contact all the elementary schools about the summer reading
program last spring.
Librarian's Report
The total circulation for August, 1979, was 9,576.
There were 228 new registrations-162 adults and 66 juveniles.
Mrs. Armstrong passed out a copy of an article,
Less Money For Libraries-The Impact, that she wanted to share with us.
We had 59 reserved books checked out in August.
We had 54 inter-library loan requests with 31 pieces of material received.
Mrs. Armstrong tooks some suggestions to the City
Secretary that we would like to have included in the Mayor's newsletter when space
is available.
Mrs. Armstrong, Mrs. Yarbrough, and Mrs. Thomp-
son, attended an Automation Workshop at the Irving Public Library on August 8.
The fall semi-annual Advisory Council meeting
was held at the Arlington Public Library on September 6. Elections were held.
(Euless Public Library Board of Trustees, Regular Meeting, September 13, 1979)
Mrs. Yarbrough reported that 567 children signed up for the summer reading program.
There were 202 who came back to receive a certificate for reading 10 books, which
is a 35.6% completion rate. Out of this 156 got gold seals. She sent a letter to
the principals of the schools represented to let them know of these children's
accomplishments.
Mrs. Yarbrough helped a group of teachers from St.
Vincent's by presenting some guide lines for selecting books for their library.
In August, there were 8 elementary storytimes with
366 children present and 26 adults.
Genealogy Room
For the month of August there were 40 visits with
30 people making these visits---Euless had 22 visits with 17 people making these
visits, 56.6%, Bedford, 9 visits, 2 people 6.6%, North Richland Hills, Grapevine,
and Fort Worth each had 1. There was 1 with no address.
The Genealogy material must be arranged according
to the Dewey Decimal System.
There is money in the budget specifically for
books in the genealogy room. This area gets 10% of the budget. The City gives us a
book budget, and Mrs. Armstrong decides which areas get what percent.
Unfinished Business
Mrs. Armstrong passed out the new-by-laws, and
we went over them.
A motion was set by Brad Hassard to accept the
by-laws as they are.
Sonja Adams seconded the motion, and the motion
was carried with all in favor.
We had received complaints on two different books
and were asked to make a recommendation on these tonight.
The first book was The Spiritual Community Guide.
Everyone on the board, but Betty Pottloff, has looked at the book and read the reviews.
Betty sent a letter stating that she had not read it; therefore, she did not have any
comments on it.
After much discussion, a motion was made by Bill
Foreman that the board recommend to the Librarian that we keep this book on the library
shelf.
(Euless Public Library Board of Trustees, Regular Meeting, September 13, 1979)
The motion was seconded by Sonja Adams,
and the motion carried with all in favor.
Mrs. Armstrong asked the secretary to notify the
person who made the complaint about this book that the recommendation of the board
will be presented at the October meeting, and the Person is invited to attend and
ask any questions.
The second book was Black Is Brown Is Tan.
Again everyone but Betty Pottloff, has read the book and the reviews.
After much discussion, a motion was made by
Sonja Adams that the board recommend to the Librarian that we keep this book on the
library shelf.
The motion was seconded by Bill Foreman, and the
vote is as follows:
Ayes: Foreman, Ragley, and Adams
Nays: Hassard (letter attached)
The motion carries.
The secretary is to write a letter concerning
this book, also.
New Business
Bill Foreman is going to work on a report and
survey and hopes to find ways to get more money in the city budget for the library.
