HomeMy WebLinkAbout2020-02-06 EULESS PUBLIC LIBRARY MINUTES OF A REGULAR MEETING OF THE LIBRARY BOARD THURSDAY,FEBRUARY 6,2020 ITEM NO. 1 CALLED TO ORDER A regular meeting of the Euless Public Library Board was called to order by Chairman Snitz at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday,February 6, 2020, in the Conference Room of the Library, 1100 Westpark Way. Those present included Chairman Barney Snitz, Vice Chairman Allan Gibbs, Board Member Leslie Kane and Alternate Rochelle Ragas. Board Members Chris McAllister, Mike McGehee, Jim Hamilton and Alternate Mavy Wright were not present. STAFF MEMBERS PRESENT Sherry Knight,Library Director Mollie Snapp,Administrative Assistant VISITORS LuAnn Portugal, Euless,Texas Leon Hogg,Euless, Texas Jeremy Tompkins, Euless City Council ITEM NO. 2 APPROVED LIBRARY BOARD MINUTES Chairman Snitz asked for a motion to accept the minutes of the regular meeting held January 2, 2020. The motion was made by Vice Chairman Gibbs and seconded by Board Member Kane. ITEM NO.3 WELCOMED VISITORS Chairman Snitz welcomed all visitors present. ITEM NO. 4 PRESENTED LIBRARY ADMINISTRATOR'S REPORT ❖ Trends in Library Services Library Director Sherry Knight gave a presentation on the latest library trends including the following: ditching Dewey, "Library of Things," makerspaces, going fine free, virtual reality, coding,gamification, E-Sports, and"destination"libraries. Ms. Knight also shared some statistics of how libraries contribute to the community in different ways. Vice Chairman Gibbs inquired about our shelving techniques for our ditching Dewey project, "Patron Centered Classification (PCC)," and the space needed and procurement of items for "Library of Things." Library Board Minutes,February 6,2020,Page 1 of 3 Library Board Minutes, February 6,2020,Page 2 of 3 Leon Hogg of Euless, TX spoke of his experience renting items like those in "Library of Things" and how it shortens the life of products. Councilperson Jeremy Tompkins stated that he appreciated the forward-thinking of the director by staying attuned to the latest trends. ❖ Construction Update Ms. Knight gave an update on the progress of the construction of the library and shared the latest drone video. Vice Chairman Gibbs inquired about any changes in the timeline. Ms. Knight stated that it remained at late spring. ❖ Classes &Events Update Ms. Knight gave an overview of current and upcoming programs including "Love Me Some Puzzles," "Make it and Take it Workshop" and the "Adult Spelling Bee." She also provided information on area tax assistance locations. ITEM NO. 5 REPORTS Library Board Chairman Chairman Snitz asked Council Member Tompkins about the newly designed city website. Mr. Tompkins discussed the current changes and future improvements. Ms. Knight spoke of the website advantages from the staff perspective. Library Board Vice-Chairman Vice Chairman Gibbs gave an overview of his trip to Israel and Jordan and inquired about updates regarding the installation of the Bubble Wall. Ms. Knight stated that the vendor was scheduling a trip to visit the site to take final measurements. Library Board Members No comments. ITEM NO. 6 PUBLIC COMMENTS LuAnn Portugal of Euless, Texas, stated that the meeting was very informative. Leon Hogg of Euless, Texas introduced himself and spoke of building the library in 1996. Ms. Knight complimented the plans from 1996 in building the shell out to benefit us today. Jeremy stated that he appreciated the board members service.
