HomeMy WebLinkAbout1976-12-02 EULESS PUBLIC LIBRARY BOARD OF TRUSTEES Regular Meeting December 2, 1976 CALL TO ORDER The meeting was called to order at 7:35 PM by Dottie Ragley, Chairman. Members attending: Roy Blood Inez Morrison Dottie Ragley Barbara Zieschang Members absent and excused: Sis Perkins Bill McCray Also attending, Geneva Armstrong, Librarian; and Mayor Pro Tem Willie Mae McCormick. MINUTES APPROVED, October 4. 1976 No corrections forthcoming, the minutes were declared approved as written by the Chairman. LIBRARIAN'S REPORT - Mrs. Armstrong circulation record shows an increase of +15.6% over the first two months of the last fiscal year. The new service of loan collections to schools in Euless are partly responsible for the increase. The Texas Library Association District VII meeting was held October 15-16 at North. Texas State Uni- versity in Denton. The FRIENDS OF THE EULESS LIBRARY annual meeting was held October 26. A new part-time Manpower employee, a junior high school girl has been hired for 10 hours per week. Her name is Dorcas Taylor. A Workshop sponsored by the Major Resource System was held in Arlington on November 4. A two part Creative Film Programming was scheduled. The Adult Programming was attended by Mrs. Armstrong; the Children' s Programming session was attended by Trinka Neal. Children's Book Week was observed November 8-13. Mrs. Armstrong served as sponsor for the Texas Women' s University group from the library school on a trip to Brentfield Elementary School, Richardson, Texas, on November 11 . The guest speaker was childrens author Margaret Henry. The Texas Municipal League met in Dallas on November 14, 15 and 16. The dedication of the Sundial in the rotunda at the City Complex was attended by Mrs. Armstrong on November 21 . A meeting of the Standing Committees of the Major Resource System Library System Service was held November 30 at Arlington Public Library. YOU MAY DROP THEM IN THE BOOK SLOT, IF NECESSARY. HISTORIAN - Inez Morrison The first scrapbook which covers 1967 to 1974 is almost completed and will be ready for members to see by the next meeting. The second scrapbook which covers 1975 to the present is still being compiled. GENEALOGY ROOM All metal and machinery are removed, the concrete apron has been taken out, and the room is ready for the electrical work and raising the ceiling. After these two activities, the FRIENDS and the Board stand ready to help decorate and equip the Room. Major Resource System - B. Zieschang The computer-feasibility study which was recommended for this year is not being done due to the Director of the Center Library' s veto. Otherwise, all plans are proceeding. The Standing Committees have met several times this year and the Council is receiving their recommenda- tions and findings. COUNCIL FOR SOCIAL CONCERNS - B. Zieschang The Collection and Distribution Center is active. Three personal warehouses are being used as storage and sorting areas. An organization meeting of the Administrative Staff is scheduled for the December 6th meeting. Clothing for children from infancy through high school and canned food are being collected and distributed. As of this meeting 25 families have been aided and referred to appro- priate agencies. This activity is an emergency aid only and is not intended to compete with any other active agency. Vti� The Education and Prevention Comission has had veiwings of the films and information selected for the VD program for the school administration and counselors, and for a group of parents of junior high school students. The parents were unanimously enthusiastic about the need for this program and all wanted their own children to see the program whether in or out of the schools. The school administra- tion is determined not to use the program until a mandate from parents is obtained. A showing of the program is scheduled for 6:30 PM Monday, December 6, for the JayCees speakers bureau group who will be working with the program. There will be several public showings of this program to encourage parents to petition the school administration for its use as a regular part of the health curriculum. It is hoped that appropri- ate information can be available to high school, junior high EULESS LIBRARY BOARD - December 2, 1976 - Page 3 school, and at least the sixth grade, if not fifth and fourth. We have been informed that children as young as 10 years old are frequently (the quote is "daily") showing up at local hospitals with VD infections, the most frequent repeaters are 15 years old. Rick Griffin's program is working with three client families and Rick says the doctors are pleased with the progress so far.
