HomeMy WebLinkAbout2011-11-14 Historical Preservation Committee Minutes November 14, 2011 CALL TO ORDER Chair, Bill Golden, called the meeting to order at 10:02 a.m. The meeting was held at City Hall at 201 North Ector Drive, Euless, TX. MEMBERS PRESENT Leah Bennett, Perry Brockmeyer, Doris Brown, Michele Burger, Bill Byers, Weldon Cannon, Barbara Collier, Iris Elliott, Betty Fuller, Beth Gathings, James Gathings, Helen Gleghorn, Bill Golden, Don Martin, David Massey, Robert Nail, Gary Parker, Faye Stinneford, Helen Voss and Mavy Wright. Gary Fieldsend and Council Member Donna Mickan reported they couldn't attend the meeting. RECOGNITION OF VISITORS Council Member Leon Hogg Peggy Vandiver Joyce Wallace STAFF PRESENT Michael Davenport, Recreation Superintendant Ofa "Mary" Faiva-Siale, Projects Coordinator Ray McDonald, Director of Parks & Community Services APPROVAL OFMLIUTES Mavy Wright did not docent on October 8, 2011. Faye Stinneford made a motion to approve the minutes with the correction, Helen Voss seconded the motion, motion approved. TREASURER'S REPORT Treasurer, Barbara Collier, reported that the final balance for October was $6,281 and $18 was collected from the donation jar making the current balance $6,299. DOCENT'S REPORT/RECRUITMENT 1. Bill Golden thanked everyone who served as docents over the past month. 2. A ladies group will be touring Heritage Park on November 18, 2011 at 11:30 a.m. Doris Brown, Bill Byers and Bill Golden volunteered to serve as docents. 3. The following people volunteered to docent during Heritage Park Christmas: Betty Fuller, Iris Elliott, Doris Brown, Michele Burger, Leah Bennett, Weldon Cannon, David and Veva Lou Massey, Peggy Vandiver and Perry Brockmeyer. Everyone can work in two hour shifts and specific tour times of the three facilities will be posted on site. STATUS OF CURRENT PROJECTS HPC MTG 111411 Page 1 • 1. Executive Sub-Committee: Bill Golden reported that the City requested an Executive Sub-Committee to meet with them periodically. Bill Byers, Gary Fieldsend, Helen Voss, Barbara Collier, Leah Bennett and Bill Golden will serve on this Sub-Committee. 2. Acquisition Sub-Committee: • The Drill Press has been acquired. It's in good condition and very old. • Perry Brockmeyer may be able to acquire a chuck wagon for Heritage Park. • Several other items have been acquired and paperwork has been submitted to the City. • A sewing machine from 1916 was also acquired for the archives. 3. McCormick Barn: The barn door is in the process of being installed. The lights inside the barn have been installed. 4. Fuller House: The Player Piano will be moved back to the Fuller House. The need for more furniture for the rooms was discussed. A "wish list" may be posted asking for various items. 5. Museum Setup Sub-Committee: Helen Voss, Bill Golden and Bill Byers discussed the following: • Reported that the City looked at the building and were unhappy with the condition of the building. • The building will be painted, track lights will be installed and wood floor will be put down in a couple of the smaller rooms. • The mural and timelines are coming along and there is continual communication between the teacher and all parties involved. • Billy Byers and Bill Golden will meet with the City to see about keeping the stage. It was discussed that the stage is not handicapped compliant and must be removed. The stairs to the stage will be removed and a 3 ft. fence will be placed around the perimeter making the stage inaccessible to the public. The stage will be converted and no longer serve as a stage but as a display location. • The landscape in the front entry looks beautiful and the trip hazard in front of the building has been fixed. • Bill Golden informed the members that all work in the museum will be halted until the City can get in the building to paint and put down the floors, etc. • The kitchen will remain and not changed. • The display cases are being worked on. • All items at the Fuller House that is not of its time period will be removed to the museum. The need for a period refrigerator for Fuller House was discussed. 6. Evolving History Sub-Committee: • Barbara Collier displayed photos of the building progress of the Greek Orthodox Church. • Mrs. Collier asked for a volunteer to photograph various locations in Euless as she will be away for about 3 weeks. Faye Stinneford volunteered to photograph the facilities. • Bill Golden has an overhead aerial of the old Amon Carter location. • Mr. Golden also has old matchbook covers of various interesting Euless locations. 7. Historical Marker Program: Weldon Cannon and the Sub-Committee will meet after today's meeting. CHAIRMAN'S REPORT 1. Bill Golden reported and/or discussed the following: • Discussed the difficulty in proceeding with various "small" projects at the museum and Heritage Park due to the members' inability to access funds on an as needed basis. At present, all purchases HPC MTG 111411 Page 2 must be pre-approved at the regular monthly meetings. The Committee discussed the need to have access to monies as needed in order to proceed with various projects in a timelier manner. James Gathings made a motion to allow up to $500 per month for various purchases as needed by the members without waiting for approval at the monthly meeting, with approval/agreement between both the Chairman and the Treasurer. This amount is automatically renewable each month. Faye Stinneford seconded the motion, no one opposed, motion carried. • Indicated that the City offered to pay for the Committee's Christmas luncheon. The luncheon will be at Ravens Grille. Faye Stinneford will take RSVP and coordinate with the City. The luncheon will be for members only. • Asked for volunteers to decorate the Christmas trees. Betty Fuller, Faye Stinneford, Helen Voss, Michele Burger, Peggy Vandiver, Iris Elliott and Bill Golden volunteered for the project. • A couple inquired about the possibility of holding their wedding ceremony at the McCormick Barn. Some members felt the request should be denied, others felt it would be easy and good publicity for Heritage Park. After some discussion, Barbara Collier made a motion to allow certain request but that a Sub-Committee be formed to set stipulations and guidelines to limit what is allowed. Robert Nail seconded the motion, motion approved. The Sub-Committee will include Barbara Collier, Faye Stinneford, Bill Byers, Helen Voss and Bill Golden. STAFF REPORT 1. Staff will be transcribing the oral history recordings as time allows. Currently there is one of Jimmy Payton, Bill Gay and Helen Gleghorn. 2. A camera has been purchased for the Committee to photograph all incoming loans and/or donations for the City's files. The camera will be placed at Fuller House. OTHER REPORTS 1. Robert Nail indicated his hope that one day in the near future Heritage Park may be open for more than one day a month. 2. Faye Stinneford invited and handed out a coupon pertaining to a Euless Citizens Fire Academy fundraiser. 3. Beth Gathings gave Barbara Collier a booklet of a historical nature to display as a part of the archives. 4. Michele Burger introduced Joyce Wallace to the Committee. Mrs. Wallace submitted an application to join the Historical Preservation Committee. 5. Jan Bellamy invited the members to an event at Roanoke on Saturday, December 3, 2011. ADJOURNMENT James Gathings made a motion to adjourn the meeting. David Massey seconded the motion. Motion approved.
