HomeMy WebLinkAbout2012-02-13 Historical Preservation Committee Minutes February 13, 2012 CALL TO ORDER Chair, Bill Golden, called the meeting to order at 10:05 a.m. The meeting was held at City Hall at 201 North Ector Drive, Euless, TX. MEMBERS PRESENT Leah Bennett, Perry Brockmeyer, Doris Brown, Michele Burger, Bill Byers, Joe Cannon, Weldon Cannon, Barbara Collier, Iris Elliott, Betty Fuller, Helen Gleghorn, Bill Golden, Peggy Vandiver, Norma Lively, Don Martin, David Massey, Veva Lou Massey, Robert Nail, Gary Parker, Helen Payton, Helen Voss, Glenn Walker and Mavy Wright. RECOGNITION OF VISITORS Council Member Leon Hogg James Cannon STAFF PRESENT Michael Davenport, Recreation Superintendant Ofa '`Mary" Faiva-Siale, Projects Coordinator APPROVAL OF MINUTES A correction was made to the spelling of Mavy Wright's last name on page 2, item number 3. Peggy Vandiver made a motion to approve the minutes with the correction. Helen Voss seconded the motion, motion approved. TREASURER'S REPORT Treasurer, Barbara Collier, reported that the balance on .January 9, 2012 was $6,378. $21.99 was collected from the donation jar making the current balance $6,399.99. DOCENT'S REPORT/RECRUITMENT 1. Docent reports for open house and special tours: a. Meadow Creek Elementary toured Heritage Park on January 11, there were 124 visitors. b. Stonegate Elementary School toured the facility on January 12, there were 109 visitors. c. Regular open house was on January 14, with 41 visitors. d. A Girl Scout group toured on January 17, with 15 visitors. e. Lakewood Elementary School toured on January 24, with 145 visitors. f. Open house was on Saturday, February 11. There were 21 visitors. g. Bill Golden thanked everyone who served as docents during the tours. 2. David and Veva Lou Massey, Mavy Wright (if off work), Doris Brown, Helen Voss, Iris Elliott, Bill Golden and Peggy Vandiver volunteered to serve as docents at open house on March 10, 2012. HPC MTG 021312 Page 1 NEW PROJECTS 1. Peggy Vandiver indicated that some scrapbooks in the Fuller House were falling apart. Betty Fuller and Helen Gleghorn will work to restore the books. STATUS OF CURRENT PROJECTS 1. Fuller House /Himes Log House Display Signs—Mavy Wright • Staff helped complete signs for the Police display case in the museum. • Display signs for the Fuller House and Log House will be done once the Museum is completed. 2. McCormick Barn Display—Bill Byers • The panels are inside the barn and will be installed soon. 3. Library History / Genealogy Room—Betty Fuller reported that the Cotton Gin tile is on display at the Library. She noted that it looked beautiful. 4. Museum Setup Sub-Committee—Helen Voss discussed the following: • Thanked the City for installing the wood floors, painting the building, converting the stage and installing the tract lighting. • Will continue to maintain communication with the art teacher about the time line and mural projects. • Staff will follow up on acquiring the Euless seal for display in the Museum. • Still need a blackboard for the school room. Betty Fuller will meet with the school district to see if they can locate one. Veva Lou Massey will also look into acquiring one. • Indicated that Gary Parker was recently added to the Museum Sub-committee and he's been a great asset. • Peggy Vandiver would like to he a member of the Sub-committee. 5. Photography/ Website: • Bill Golden reported that Gary Fieldsend cannot attend meetings during the day due to his job; however,he is very interested in remaining on the Committee. He will serve as docent anytime he is needed. • Mr. Fieldsend acquired photographs from Robert Nail that he scanned and returned to him. • Mr. Fieldsend is working with staff to update the photos on the master list kept at PACS. 6. Evolving History Sub-Committee—Barbara Collier reported the following: • Is working with Weldon Cannon to review the articles on microfilm at the Hurst Library. • Weldon Cannon suggested photographing Hwy. 183 at various angles before the freeway expansion reaches Euless. Barbara Collier will work on the project. 7. Historical Marker Program—Michael Davenport: • Weldon Cannon was asked to give a short presentation at an upcoming Pre-Council meeting regarding the marker he is applying for. • Bill Golden presented the idea that the Committee should purchase Euless markers for the three buildings at Heritage Park. After a brief discussion, Betty Fuller made a motion for the Committee to purchase Euless markers for the Fuller House, the Himes Log House and the McCormick Barn using the Committee's funds. Weldon Cannon seconded the motion. No one opposed, motion approved. HPC MTG 021312 Page 2 • Betty Fuller previously expressed interest in acquiring a local marker for the house on Main Street that belonged to her husband's family. She reported that the current owner of the house indicated he may not be interested in having a marker placed on the building. • The markers cost approximately $500 for both the medallion and the plaque. MCCORMICK BARN/OUTDOOR UPDATE 1. The barn door has been installed. FULLER HOUSE UPDATE 1. The Committee needs furniture and other decor for the den. Helen Voss may have access to some furniture from the right time frame. 2. It was discussed that a picture of Iva Nail as a young lady should be hung in her bedroom. 3. It was also discussed that a brief write up and photo of Mr. and Mrs. Nail's wedding would be interesting to place in the Fuller House. CHAIRMAN'S REPORT 1. Bill Golden reported and/or discussed the following: • New prospect for an oral history recording of Curtis McGowan. • Thanked Ray McDonald for picking up the wire panels for the barn display. • Would like to find a better display location for the quilt. Would also like to acquire photos and a short write up about each of the people whose names are on the quilt. Helen Gleghorn will work on the write ups for the display. Gary Parker suggested displaying the quilt on the museum stage. STAFF REPORT 1. Staff gave Bill Golden an invitation that the Mayor had forwarded from the Westlake Historical Society. This was an event regarding the history of the Texas flag. 2. Arbor Daze will be on April 28 and 29 and the Committee will have their usual tent. OTHER REPORTS 1. Joe Cannon enjoyed serving as a docent on Saturday, February 1 1, 2012. 2. Mavy Wright mentioned the idea of installing security cameras inside the Museum for security purposes. Others in the Committee thought this a good idea as well. 3. Helen Gleghorn's 1946 graduation class was all girls as the boys were away during the war. She displayed a white silk scarf that Bill Byers sent each of the girls from Japan. The Committee enjoyed Mrs. Gleghorn's story. ADJOURNMENT Mavy Wright made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Perry Brockmeyer seconded the motion. Motion approved.
