HomeMy WebLinkAbout2012-03-12 Historical Preservation Committee Minutes March 12, 2012 CALL TO ORDER Chair, Bill Golden, called the meeting to order at 10:00 a.m. The meeting was held at City Hall at 201 North Ector Drive, Euless, TX. MEMBERS PRESENT Gary Barnhill, Peggy Vandiver, Perry Brockmeyer, Doris Brown, Michele Burger, Joe Cannon, Weldon Cannon, Barbara Collier, Iris Elliott, Helen Gleghorn, Bill Golden, Norma Lively, Don Martin, David Massey, Shirley Mercer, Robert Nail, Gary Parker, Helen Payton, Faye Stinneford, Helen Voss and Mavy Wright. RECOGNITION OF VISITORS Council Member Leon Hogg STAFF PRESENT Michael Davenport, Recreation Superintendant Ofa"Mary" Faiva-Siale, Projects Coordinator APPROVAL OF MINUTES Peggy Vandiver made a motion to approve the minutes. Faye Stinneford seconded the motion, motion approved. TREASURER'S REPORT Treasurer, Barbara Collier, reported that the balance on February 13, 2012 was $6,399.99. $33.61 was collected from the donation jar and a $50 memorial of Council Member Leon Hogg's mother was received making the final balance on March 12, 2012, $6,483.60. DOCENT'S REPORT/RECRUITMENT 1. Docent reports for open house and special tours: a. There were eight visitors on Saturday, March 10, 2012. Norma Lively also served as a docent that day. b. Iris Elliot, Helen Voss, Barbara Collier, Peggy Vandiver, Helen Payton and Bill Golden volunteered to docent during open house on Saturday, April 14, 2012. STATUS OF CURRENT PROJECTS 1. Museum Setup Sub-Committee—Helen Voss discussed the following: • Various members met with the Police Benevolence Society to install a security system inside the Ruth Millican Center. The camera will continuously re-record over existing tapes on an ongoing basis. The system will cost approximately $1000. • A workday was called for Wednesday, March 14, 2012 and several members will attend. • Committee is still looking for a blackboard to go in the school room. HPC MTG 031212 Page 1 • Reported that a water heater faucet was left dripping inside the museum resulting in a minor flood along the floor. Staff was contacted and the situation was taken care of. • A porch will be added to the building. The porch could also be used for displays. • The display cabinets should be completed in about two weeks. • Members interested in joining the museum Sub-Committee can contact Bill Golden or Helen Voss. • The City seal has been installed in the building and it looks great. • The historical mural will be done sometime in the summer. 2. Oral History Project: Bill Golden would like to do an oral history interview of Curtis McGowan. Mr. McGowan worked at the E-Z Way Market for years. Barbara Collier may go with Ofa Mary to do the interview. 3. Evolving History Sub-Committee—Barbara Collier reported the following: • Barbara Collier emailed Doris Brown documents for the project. Mrs. Brown hasn't been able to open the documents due to differences in the programs they use. Helen Voss may be able to help resolved the situation. • New businesses around Euless will be photographed for the records. 4. Plaque Project—Faye Stinneford reported the following: • Robert and Iva Nail donated $50 in memorial of Council Member Leon Hogg's mother. Their names will be added. • Leah Bennett's name will be added to the Chairman/ Co-chairman plaque. 5. Historical Marker Program—Michael Davenport: • Weldon Cannon will give a presentation about the local marker application he submitted at pre-council on Tuesday, March 13, 2012. • Shirley Melson donated $500 for a Euless marker for the Himes Log House. • Elizabeth Wilcox donated another $500 for a Euless marker for the McCormick Barn. • Staff will make tri-folds about the program to distribute and handout at events like Arbor Daze. MCCORMICK BARN/OUTDOOR UPDATE 1. The barn door was installed, something was warped on it and Bill Golden will correct the situation. 2. Bill Golden will schedule a workday for everyone to work on the Barn display. FULLER HOUSE UPDATE 1. Contractors will be replacing the roof within the next few days. Several members asked that they be notified anytime contractors work inside historical facilities. They would like to have a member present. 2. Photograph of a young Iva Nail and wedding photos of her and Mr. Nail are needed for the house. 3. Furniture is needed for the empty room. Helen Voss will acquire a piece of furniture for the room. HPC MTG 031212 Page 2 4. The Player piano will be moved back into the Fuller House. 5. An audio recording about Mr. and Mrs. Nails wedding would bring a lot of interest for visitors. HIMES LOG HOUSE UPDATE 1. The ironing board in the Log House needs to be moved to the Museum. CHAIRMAN'S REPORT 1. Bill Golden reported and/or discussed the following: • Will take volunteers to work the Committee's Arbor Daze tent at the April meeting. • Read a thank you note from the Girls Scouts to the Committee. They toured in February. • Discussed an invitation from the Birdville Historical Society to purchase a $50 brick as a fundraiser. After some discussion it was agreed that the Committee will purchase a brick as the Birdville Society has been supportive of Euless projects in the past. OTHER REPORTS 1. It was discussed that Historical ads are included in the water bill, monthly newsletters, etc. A Facebook account will be set up as another way of advertising historical activities. Staff will also look into having open house advertised on the City's main page the week of open house. 2. Bill Golden noted that permission is acquired before students are photographed during Heritage Park tours. 3. Joe Cannon has several important items he plans to donate to the Museum. He will also loan an old ice box that's in good condition for display at the Museum. 4. Helen Gleghorn also has some items that belonged to Grandfather Whitener she may donate or loan. 5. It was discussed that a thank you note to John Eden for the donation and/or loan of"Billy" Eden's war memorabilia will be mailed to him. ADJOURNMENT Faye Stinneford made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Barbara Collier seconded the motion. Motion approved.
