HomeMy WebLinkAbout2012-05-14 Historical Preservation Committee Minutes May 14, 2012 CALL TO ORDER Chair, Bill Golden, called the meeting to order at 10:04 a.m. The meeting was held at City Hall at 201 North Ector Drive, Euless, TX. MEMBERS PRESENT Perry Brockmeyer, Doris Brown, Jan Bellamy, Michele Burger, Bill Byers, Joe Cannon, Weldon Cannon, Barbara Collier, Iris Elliott, Betty Fuller, Helen Gleghorn, Bill Golden, Peggy Vandiver, David Massey, Veva Lou Massey, Shirley Mercer, Robert Nail, Gary Parker, Helen Payton, Faye Stinn€ford, Helen Voss and Mavy Wright. RECOGNITION OF VISITORS Ben Wilheight Norma Keplinger STAFF PRESENT Michael Davenport, Recreation Superintendant Ofa "Mary" Faiva-Siale, Projects Coordinator Ray McDonald, Director of Parks & Community Services APPROVAL OF MINUTES Peggy Vandiver made a motion to approve the minutes. Helen Voss seconded the motion. Motion approved. TREASURER'S REPORT Treasurer, Barbara Collier, reported the balance on April 9, 2012 was $6,504.35. $50 was spent to purchase a brick for a Birdville Museum fundraising. $12.30 was collected from the donation jar making the balance on May 14, 2012, $6,466.65. DOCENT'S REPORT/RECRUITMENT 1. Docent reports for open house and special tours: a. Eight people visited during open house on Saturday, April 14, 2012. b. Arbor Daze, April 28 and 29, members reported the following: • Interaction with the public this year was better than in years past. There were a lot of opportunities to discuss Euless history with the public. Members thought the event went very well. • Having Starbucks and other departments inside the tent greatly helped traffic. • Great opportunity to give out information about the local marker program. • Commended Gary Fieldsend for working on the display and set up of the photographs. c. David and Veva Lou Massey, Joe Cannon, Helen Gleghorn, Iris Elliot and Bill Golden volunteered to serve as docents during open house on Saturday, June 9, 2012. HPC MTG 051412 Page 1 STATUS OF CURRENT PROJECTS 1. Acquisition Sub-Committee—Bill Byers: • Acquisition of military items has been going very well. • Back porch is done and looks great. • Many items and artifacts have been acquired not only from Committee members but from the public as well. Robert and Iva Nail donated the original stained glass window at the top of the original First United Methodist Church of Euless' building. 2. Library History/Genealogy Room: Betty Fuller indicated there are delays in completing the tile project. 3. Museum Setup Sub-Committee Helen Voss: • Bill Golden noted the possible need for help moving various items back and forth between the Museum and the Fuller House. • Still need a blackboard and an old red wagon. • Indicated the need for a name for the museum. After some discussion, Weldon Cannon made a motion to approach City Council to name the museum the "Euless Heritage Museum". Faye Stinneford seconded the motion. No one opposed, motion approved. • Discussed the possible need to move the Police display into another room as the military room may be too full. • A Nazi flag was acquired along with military war memorabilia that once belonged to Sam Harrington. Bill Golden contacted the Holocaust Museum and the Texas State Historical Commission regarding proper protocol when displaying the flag. The members agreed with the general advice regarding the flag; it should not be prominently displayed and or mounted in such a way as to honor it. Proper protocol will be followed regarding its display. • Robert Nail said he had a military jacket he would donate to the museum. • David Massey has a complete Coast Guard uniform his neighbor donated for display at the museum. • Mr. Massey also donated his complete Army uniform and pictures of Tub Huffman's plane taken in 1944. 4. Evolving History Sub-Committee Barbara Collier displayed various photos taken of different locations around Euless. 5. Historical Marker Program Weldon Cannon: • Currently working on applications and text for the three buildings at Heritage Park. A draft of the Fuller House write up has been given to Betty Fuller, Bill Golden and Robert Nail to proof. CHAIRMAN'S REPORT 1. The Museum pre-open house will be on Monday, June 11 at 11:30 a.m. Invitations were handed out to all members present. Staff will mail invitations to those who were absent. The Mayor will take care of food and beverages, invitations, etc. The event is not open to the public. 2. The cow panel will be installed in the barn in the near future. 3. The upstairs shutters at the Log House was left open the previous week but has now been secured. HPC MTG 051412 Page 2 4. The summer meetings will be held on the second Monday of the month at 10 a.m. in the Pre-council chamber. STAFF 1. Staff thanked the members for working Arbor Daze and expressed appreciation to the Committee for all they do on behalf of the City. 2. Provided loan and donation forms to the members, indicating the need for forms to be completed for all new acquisitions. OTHER REPORTS 1. Helen Voss thanked Bill Golden for the countless hours of work he puts in at the Museum. She appreciates Mr. Golden's easy manner and patience. Other members were also appreciative of Mr. Golden's contributions to the Committee. 2. Weldon Cannon noted his recent attendance at Pastor Gary Turner's retirement from the First United Methodist Church. Mr. Cannon enjoyed Mr. Turner's sermon. 3. Faye Stinneford discussed a Citizen's Fire Academy fundraiser on June 16, 2012. 4. David and Veva Lou Massey have acquired a 1904, a 1922, a 1957/58 and a 1960's photograph taken of First Baptist Church buildings. They are also acquiring a photograph taken in 1922 of the entire membership of the Church. Mr. Massey's Grandparents, mother, and step-mother, Margie, who was a baby in her aunt's arms, are in the photograph. The photographs are on loan to the museum. 5. Michele Burger reported the following: • Took brochures about Euless historical programs to display in Grapevine. • Donated a couple of booklets. • Reported that new member Joyce Wallace has been ill. She is recovering from recent surgery. • Is teaching a tap class at the North Richland Hills Rec Center if anyone wanted to take classes. ADJOURNMENT Peggy Vandiver made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Helen Voss seconded the motion. Motion approved.
