HomeMy WebLinkAbout2012-06-04 Regular Meeting Parks and Leisure Services Board June 4, 2012 CALL TO ORDER The regular meeting of the Parks and Leisure Services Board was called to order at 7:02 p.m. on Monday, June 4, 2012, in the Council Chambers of the Euless City Hall building by Chairman Eric Owens. Other Board Members present: Carroll Scott, Darrel Knobloch, John Raab, Randy Jones, Travis Riffle and alternate Tiffany Smith. Members absent: Carl Miller. Staff members present: Director of Parks and Community Services Ray McDonald, Parks Superintendent Terry Boaz, Parks Manager Randy Smith, Recreation Superintendent Michael Davenport, Recreation Supervisor Heidi Taylor, Recreation Program Coordinator Robbie Rodgers and Administrative Secretary Linda Lux. Visitors present: Danny and Debra Thomas and Council Member Leon Hogg. INVOCATION Randy Jones gave the invocation. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Chairman Owens asked if there were any additions or corrections to the minutes from the May 7, 2012 regular meeting. Darrel Knobloch made the motion to approve the minutes as presented and was seconded by Carroll Scott. The vote was unanimous. I. Board Member's Reports Carroll Scott—McCormick Park, Preserve at McCormick Park— reported no items of concern Travis Riffle— Reflection Park, Villages of Bear Creek Park— reported no items of concern John Raab - Parks at Texas Star Athletic Complex— reported no items of concern Parks and Leisure Services Board Page 2 June 4, 2012 Randy Jones - Midway Park, Blessing Branch Park—reported no items of concern Darrel Knobloch - Bob Eden Park, Trailwood Park— reported no items of concern Tiffany Smith —West Park, Wilshire Park— reported no items of concern Carl Miller—South Euless, Heritage Park- reported no items of concern (Carl's report was emailed to Eric Owens since he was not able to attend the meeting) Eric Owens—J. A. Carr Park, Kiddie Carr Park— reported no items of concern Chairman Owens highlighted some Special Events for May, June and July: • May 19th— Movie in the Park with about 150 in attendance • June 23rd — Movie in the Park—Villages of Bear Creek Amphitheater • July 27th— Movie in the Park—outside the Dr Pepper StarCenter Chairman Owens thanked everyone for their reports tonight. II. Volunteer of the Month Chairman Owens presented the June 2012 Volunteer of the Month plaque to Cub Scout Pack 546. Our June nomination is a group that has been a part of our program for several years. For the last few years they have manned the Arbor Daze Tree Give Away booth with two volunteers at every time slot during the entire event. They have also volunteered for numerous Texas Trash Off events each year. So in honor of their generous and giving attitude, and their dedication to our department we would like to recognize Cub Scout Pack 546 as the June 2012 Volunteer of the Month. One of the pack leaders thanked the Board Members for the plaque. Ill. Beautification Award of the Month Chairman Owens mentioned that each year from May through October we do a residential and business/civic/governmental Yard of the Month award. Parks and Leisure Services Board Page 3 June 4, 2012 Chairman Owens said the June 2012 Residential Beautification Award of the Month goes to Danny and Debra Thomas at 614 Bocowood Circle. This yard is beautifully landscaped with a variety of Esperanza, candelabra plants, broom plants, dianthus, Mexican petunias, daylilies, fountain grass and knock-out roses. The property is well maintained and a great attraction to the neighborhood. The owners take great pride in the work that has been done in their yard. Thank you for helping to beautify Euless. Mr. Thomas thanked the Board Members for the plaque. Chairman Owens said the June 2012 Business/Civic/Governmental Beautification Award of the Month goes to Taco Cabana. They have planted knock-out roses, crepe myrtles, sage bushes, ornamental grasses, assorted palms, red oaks and elm trees along the front of the building. The property is well maintained and a great attraction to the surrounding businesses as well as to their customers. It is efforts like yours that make Euless a great place to work and live. Thank you for contributing to the beautification of our city. Chairman Owens said they were not able to attend the meeting tonight so the plaque will be delivered to them. IV. Business of the Tree Board Tree Board Chairman Carroll Scott reported on the following for May 1st—31st: • Total man hours- 501.00 o 245.00 Horticulture o 121.00 Forestry o 69.00 Greenhouse o 45.00 Special Projects o 21.00 Training • There were no trees planted and no tree related purchases V. Parks and Community Services Reports a. Recreation Report— Heidi Taylor/ Robbie Rodgers Recreation Supervisor Heidi Taylor reported on the following: • Recreation center and summer events • Aquatics Parks and Leisure Services Board Page 4 June 4, 2012 Recreation Program Coordinator Robbie Rodgers reported on the following: • Summer camps and activities • New summer classes b. Parks Report— Randy Smith Parks Manager Randy Smith reported on the following: • Basketball court was refurbished at S. Euless Park • Painting at Splash Island • Midway Drive greenbelt area • Bob Eden Park c. Community Services Report—Ray McDonald Director of Parks and Community Services Ray McDonald reported on the following: • Jerry Poteet will receive his 20-year service pin at the August 14th council meeting • Community Work Day—Saturday 9th -Villages of Bear Creek Park—9:00 a.m. - Noon Chairman Owens thanked everyone for their reports. VI. Other New Business Chairman Owens mentioned there will be no meeting in July. VII. Input from City Council Members and Visitors There was no input from the audience.
